UNC’s defense may be facing a short-term shakeup, but the bigger story right now is the uncertainty around Steve Belichick’s return.
Bill Belichick said yesterday that UNC’s defensive coordinator is on medical leave because of an undisclosed illness, and the timeline remains murky. The only update Bill offered was that Steve would be back “as soon as possible,” which leaves plenty unanswered about when that actually might be.
That vagueness is familiar territory for UNC fans. Bill Belichick has not exactly made a habit of saying more than he wants to, and this situation was no different.
Maybe he genuinely doesn’t know when his son will be ready to return. Maybe he does and simply isn’t saying.
Either way, the message is the same: there’s no clear date on the calendar, and that could mean Steve misses the trip to Dublin for UNC’s Aug. 29 matchup with TCU.
From a football standpoint, this isn’t ideal, but it also isn’t a disaster on its face. Bill Belichick is more than capable of handling the defensive side in Steve’s absence.
