North Carolina’s defense may have found one of its most important answers in a player who hadn’t quite lived up to the billing early on.
The Tar Heels are heading into a pivotal season with Bill Belichick already under pressure in just his second year in Chapel Hill, and that means the margin for error is thin. If North Carolina is going to keep things moving in the right direction and give Belichick a chance to remain the head coach heading into the 2027 college football season, the veterans on this roster have to deliver. One of the biggest names in that group is former 4-star defensive back Patterson.
Patterson arrived in Chapel Hill as a 2024 4-star recruit, but his first two seasons were more quiet than eye-opening. That changed in 2025, when he put together a much stronger year with 34 total tackles, five pass deflections, two tackles for loss and an interception. Entering his third season, he has kept building on that progress during training camp.
At 6-foot-1 and 195 pounds, Patterson is now projected to be North Carolina’s CB1 in 2026. On a defense filled with proven pieces, that says plenty about how far he has come this offseason. He made a clear jump from Year 1 to Year 2, and another step forward could put him among the ACC’s best cornerbacks.
That growth matters even more because North Carolina changed a lot this offseason on both sides of the ball. With the program in a must-win year, the experienced players have to be sharp, and Patterson is part of that group. He is one of the defensive leaders and will be asked to anchor a secondary that also includes several newcomers from the transfer portal and recruiting class.
The timing is important, too. The offense figures to be a work in progress early, which puts even more pressure on the defense to hold up at every level.
Patterson was largely a non-factor as a freshman, but injuries at the top of the depth chart opened the door in 2025, and he took full advantage. That experience has pushed him into a more prominent role this season.
There is also added responsibility on the back end with defensive coordinator Steve Belichick expected to miss the season opener while still on medical leave. In that setting, Patterson’s communication will matter even more.
If his upward trajectory keeps going, North Carolina could have a legitimate standout in the secondary. And if Patterson does become the kind of elite cornerback the Tar Heels believe he can be, it would give the team a real shot at bowl eligibility after missing out last season for the first time since 2018.
