North Carolina’s board just got a little lighter, and UConn’s got a little more dangerous.
Five-star guard NaVorro Bowman Jr., the No. 11 player in the Class of 2027, has committed to the Huskies, ending a recruitment that moved fast once it really got going. Bowman Jr. had been set to take multiple official visits, including a planned stop at UNC, but his weekend trip to Storrs closed the door on the process.

UNC wasn’t the only program left on the outside. Illinois, Texas and Arizona were also in the mix, and Bowman Jr. had even canceled a scheduled visit to Illinois this weekend, a sign that the momentum was already tilting toward UConn.
Michael Malone and UNC’s staff did make a late push in this one, enough to get Bowman Jr. thinking seriously about Chapel Hill. But UConn’s pitch was steadier from the start, and the visit to campus appears to have sealed it.
For North Carolina, this doesn’t read like a crushing miss so much as a name to move past. The Tar Heels have spent plenty of time on other guards in the 2027 class, including Beckham Black, Nasir Anderson and Jordan Page, and those prospects seem to have been higher on Malone’s list over the last few months.
That doesn’t mean UNC wasn’t interested in Bowman Jr. The Tar Heels would have taken him. It just looked like a secondary lane, the kind of recruitment you stay in while working harder on other priorities.
The upside here for everyone else is simple: Bowman Jr. made a decision early enough for the rest of the board to adjust. With so many top players still uncommitted, schools can shift gears without having to wait around.
For UNC, the focus stays on the guards it has been chasing most aggressively, with room to stay flexible if another name suddenly rises. For UConn, it’s a clean win and a strong early piece for what Hurley hopes becomes an elite 2027 class.
