North Carolina’s opener against TCU offered more than a season-opening win in Dublin. It also gave a first look at how quickly Bill Belichick may be willing to turn to freshmen.
That was easy to miss in the immediate aftermath of the Aug. 29 victory, especially with the Tar Heels heading into a scheduled week off and the off-field drama that followed. But Belichick made it clear Monday that several first-year players had already earned real opportunities, and the snap counts backed it up.
Eight freshmen played at least six snaps in the game, a notable number for a contest that felt like a must-win for the program. The biggest surprise was wide receiver CJ Sadler, who was on the field for 26 snaps.
The 5-foot-8, 190-pound receiver finished with one catch for seven yards, but his usage told the story. Trech Kekahuna’s first-half fumble cut into his own chances in the second half, and Sadler ended up taking over as the main slot receiver over the final 30 minutes.
Tight end Carson Sneed also got a look, logging 10 snaps as the position group works through multiple injuries. The 6-foot-56, 240-pound freshman is not expected to have a major role with Jelani Thurman already set as the TE1, but he was still part of the rotation.
On defense, cornerback Kenton Dopson III and defensive lineman David Jackson each saw the field as well. Dopson played six snaps, while Jackson played seven. Dopson, one of the top defensive back recruits in the 2026 class, getting into a tight, competitive game stood out.
For Belichick, the bigger message may be the same one the snap counts sent: he’s not afraid to adjust, even with the season hanging in the balance.
