North Carolina’s offense got a much-needed jolt in the win over TCU, and one of the biggest reasons was the arrival of tight end Jelani Thurman.
The Tar Heels showed real improvement in several key areas, including quarterback play, pass protection, physicality, and the passing game as a whole. For a team trying to rebuild through the transfer portal, that kind of step forward matters. And Thurman was right in the middle of it.
Thurman came to Chapel Hill with plenty of intrigue after transferring from Ohio State, where his limited film pointed to a player with real upside. He had been a top-five recruit at the position, and his blend of size, athleticism, and blocking ability made him an obvious name to watch once North Carolina added him over the winter.
That interest has only grown. Injuries in the tight end room during fall camp opened the door, and Thurman moved into the No. 1 role.
He has backed up the hype with a skill set that stands out in multiple ways. His yards-after-catch ability has shown up, along with the burst and long-stride speed to turn catches into chunk gains.
He also brings value as an in-line blocker, where his length helps him seal defenders at the second level on outside zone plays.
In other words, North Carolina appears to be getting exactly the version of Thurman it hoped for. That is the upside of the portal: finding a player who has been waiting for a real shot and then watching him run with it.
His four-catch, 94-yard performance against TCU was the loudest sign yet. It might not have been a one-off.
It could be the beginning of Thurman becoming one of the ACC’s best tight ends, and that kind of profile tends to draw attention at the next level too. Athletic tight ends who can block have a way of getting noticed by NFL teams.
The next test is consistency. Thurman will need to keep producing as North Carolina moves deeper into the schedule, especially with bigger games ahead against Clemson, Notre Dame, and Miami this fall.
