North Carolina’s win over Duke came with a second storyline attached to the scoreboard: the Tar Heels may need to lean on Jaylen McGill if Benjamin Hall can’t go next week.
Hall left Durham with an undisclosed injury on the seventh play of the game and never returned, leaving his status for Week 8 uncertain. If he is unavailable against Syracuse, McGill looks like the most likely candidate to handle the early-down work between the 20s.
That role would be a meaningful one, especially after a mixed day for the sophomore. McGill got the first carry after Hall exited, but his first three quarters were uneven. He finished that stretch with 31 yards on nine carries and also put the ball on the turf on a costly third-quarter fumble.
Still, the coaching staff did not pull back from him when it mattered most. Bill Belichick and North Carolina kept McGill on the field for all eight snaps on the game-winning drive, and he made the most of the trust. McGill ripped off three carries for 44 yards and scored the touchdown that decided the game, a 24-yard burst that pushed the Tar Heels past the Blue Devils.
McGill said he was ready for the moment, and his fourth-quarter finish backed that up. If Hall is sidelined, McGill and Demon June are expected to split the workload on Saturday, with McGill projected to lead the way and June working in on third downs and in goal-line situations.

UNC May Need To Survive Syracuse Shorthanded Again
North Carolina heads into its matchup with Syracuse carrying another familiar injury report, and this one could leave the Tar Heels thin in a few key spots. Six starters are listed as questionable, including wide receiver Jordan Shipp and running back Benjamin Hall, while defensive back Tre Miller has already been ruled out.
The larger concern is the overall depth chart, with eight Tar Heels already out for the game before kickoff even arrives. Syracuse has its own availability issues with five players ruled out, but UNCs challenge is more about absorbing the losses and finding enough healthy bodies to stay balanced on both sides of the ball. Duggins is already rated as the No. 8 prospect nationally in the Class of 2029 and the top player in North Carolina, which makes this the kind of recruiting battle that will be watched closely around Chapel Hill. For the Tar Heels, keeping a high-profile in-state target in the pipeline is always important, and this one has the feel of an early test of how much traction UNC can build before the competition really heats up.
