Antawn Jamison wound up playing a bigger role in Michael Malone’s arrival at North Carolina than many fans probably realized.
In a recent interview with The News & Observer, Jamison told reporter Scott Fowler that new athletic director Steve Newmark reached out as UNC began its coaching search and asked him to take a hard look at the process. Jamison said Malone’s name came up quickly, and he pointed Newmark to his own experience with the coach in Cleveland.
"UNC put together a panel of guys who went to Carolina," Jamison told Fowler. "Steve (Newmark) reached out to me and said, 'Look, we’re putting this board together; we want to get this coaching search done right.
You have had some experience in the (NBA) front office.' Coach Malone’s name came up.
And I was like, 'Steve, I had the opportunity to be coached under Coach Malone when I was in Cleveland when I got traded from the Wizards. This is when LeBron was LeBron.
And some of the coaches kind of walked on eggshells when it came to LeBron. Not Coach Malone.
He demanded that respect, and LeBron really paid it.'"
Jamison also said he sold Newmark on Malone’s comfort with the modern college setup, which now looks a lot more like an NBA organization, complete with a GM and a full staff. Malone was open to that structure, and UNC eventually landed him.
That endorsement carries weight in Chapel Hill. Jamison was an All-American for the Tar Heels and won National Player of the Year honors in 1998. He never brought home a national championship in a Carolina uniform, but he did help lead the program to two Final Four appearances.
For older UNC fans, Jamison and Vince Carter were part of a nightly highlight reel. Now retired, Jamison says he spends more time working on his golf game while also doing what he can to help the Tar Heels get back on track.
The move to Malone came after Hubert Davis was let go following UNC’s first-round loss to VCU last season. The search that followed was wide-ranging, and Malone’s hire caught plenty of people off guard. Even so, he has already made his mark on the recruiting side, and UNC’s roster was finalized after the addition of Cameron Fens.
The Heels may not be the immediate national-title threat next season, but the expectation is clear: real progress on both ends of the floor. Jamison sounds convinced that Malone can deliver it.
