UNC wrestling got a late boost to its 2027 class this past weekend when Braylon Reynolds committed to the Tar Heels.
Reynolds, a senior from Brownsburg, Indiana, has spent most of his high school career wrestling at 144 pounds. His latest run came at Fargo Nationals in July, where he reached the championship match before losing to Jesse Grajeda by tech fall and finishing second in his weight class.
Reynolds has been one of the more closely watched recruits in the country throughout his prep career, climbing as high as fifth at 144 pounds earlier this year. Flo Wrestling lists him as a top-35 overall recruit, and he backed up that billing with a 40-3 record last season and an Indiana State Championship.
At UNC, he is expected to wrestle at 149 pounds.
His commitment pushes the number of new additions to the UNC wrestling roster to 10. The Tar Heels are bringing in seven freshmen along with Reynolds, and five of those first-year wrestlers are ranked among the top 100 recruits. Rob Koll also added two transfers: Brendan McCrone at 125 pounds from Ohio State and Christian Hansen at 184 pounds from Cornell.
McCrone stands out as the most immediate plug-and-play addition. He brings NCAA tournament experience and has wrestled for Ohio State in the Big Ten tournament over the last two seasons.
There’s also a chance UNC wrestling commit Christian Alvarez could arrive a bit earlier than expected. Alvarez was a three-sport athlete in high school and is also looking to play on UNC’s offensive line this season.
