As North Carolina keeps working the recruiting trail, Asa Montgomery is a name Tar Heel fans should keep close to the top of the list.
Montgomery is a five-star talent, but his recruitment hasn’t drawn the same constant buzz as some of the other big names in his class. CJ Rosser, DeMarcus Henry, Beckham Black and others tend to get more of the spotlight, yet Montgomery has clearly earned his place in that conversation. The attention from the media may not match the talent, but college coaches have taken notice, and plenty of programs are already in the mix.
UNC is one of them.
There’s a growing belief that Montgomery’s recruitment could ultimately come down to the rival schools on Tobacco Road. Michael Malone and his staff had the chance to host him for an official visit this weekend, and that trip gave the Tar Heels a shot to make a strong impression as they try to land him for Chapel Hill.
Montgomery also shared photos from the visit, and if you’re a UNC fan, they’re the kind that make you look twice. In Carolina Blue, he fits the picture just fine.
His stock keeps climbing, too. Jamie Shaw of Rivals, who has watched Montgomery often, believes he belongs in the mix for the No. 1 spot in the class.

That kind of praise only adds to the intrigue around a player who already brings a lot to the table. He gives off that “Swiss Army Knife” feel, the same sort of versatility people associated with Leaky Black during his time in Chapel Hill.
UNC has been aggressive with several of the top names in the 2027 class, and many of those recruits have been on campus in recent weeks. That has given Malone and his staff a chance to show off what Chapel Hill has to offer and keep building momentum with the players they want most.
Nothing is settled yet - recruiting rarely works out cleanly - but one thing is obvious: Malone and his staff are pushing hard for elite talent. Montgomery is one of the prospects plenty of people hope ends up wearing Carolina Blue.

Dylan Betts, a five-star Class of 2028 center and 7-foot-3 prospect at IMG Academy, has taken an unofficial visit to Chapel Hill as part of a recruitment process that is quickly broadening beyond one region or one conference.
UNCs staff has been building a relationship with Betts while schools like Michigan and Illinois have already hosted him, and Alabama is also lined up for a future visit. For the Tar Heels, getting in early matters with a player of that size and ceiling, because the race for elite frontcourt talent tends to move fast once the major programs start pressing their cases. UNCs New Backcourt Duo Brings More Than Fans Might Expect
North Carolinas newest backcourt pairing arrived with plenty of intrigue during a recent media availability, as transfer guards Angelo Brizzi and Neo Avdalas were introduced to the Tar Heels audience.
