UNC Has A Rare Chance To Rattle Miami Again

As Miami once again stands in the crosshairs of an unexpected North Carolina team led by NFL legend Bill Belichick, the stage is set for a potential college football stunner reminiscent of the infamous 2004 Halloween upset.

The calendar has landed on Halloween Weekend again, and Chapel Hill is about to relive a familiar kind of chaos.

Twenty-two years ago, No. 4 Miami came into North Carolina expecting to roll, only to leave stunned after Connor Barth drilled a 42-yard game-winning field goal in a 2004 upset that turned on a Tar Heels team nobody thought could hang. That Hurricanes roster was stacked with future NFL names like Greg Olsen, Frank Gore, Devin Hester, Jon Beason, Antrel Rolle, and Brandon Meriweather.

Now the setup feels eerily close in a different era. This time, Miami arrives in Chapel Hill as the nation’s No. 1 team, and North Carolina is the opponent standing between the Hurricanes and a tricky stretch before their showdown with No.

5 Notre Dame in two weeks. The Tar Heels are 12-8 in conference play all-time against Miami, and Bill Belichick gets another shot at taking down a top-ranked team.

There are enough echoes from 2004 to make this matchup hard to ignore. North Carolina is coming off a loss to Syracuse after dropping its game before that to No. 11 Utah, and while every season tells its own story, the Tar Heels have the same kind of unpredictable edge that makes an upset feel possible.

A lot of that hinges on quarterback Billy Edwards, who has been part of the inconsistency that has made North Carolina hard to pin down. But the Tar Heels do have answers around him. Jordan Shipp has been playing excellent football, and Jelani Thurman has emerged as a breakout tight end.

If North Carolina is going to make this interesting, the run game may be the place to start. Benjamin Hall, Jaylen McGill, and Demon June give the Tar Heels a healthy three-man backfield that could help them build a sustained attack against a Miami defense that may not be expecting it. That’s the formula that worked in 2004, when Chad Scott, Darian Durant, and Madison Hedgecock combined for 274 rushing yards against the Hurricanes.

Offensively, North Carolina has struggled to keep things moving after its opening scripted series, but Miami’s defense has the look of a classic Belichick unit: disciplined, talented, and usually stingy when it comes to big plays. The exceptions have come against Notre Dame and Syracuse.

On the other side, Miami quarterback Darian Mensah has yet to face a defense that can really bother him in the pocket or in the passing game, and North Carolina may be the first team capable of doing it. Belichick’s defenses have historically been at their best in the biggest matchups, even if the Tar Heels will also have their hands full with Malachi Toney, college football’s second-best wide receiver.

The larger warning for Miami is simple: the No. 1 team has looked vulnerable lately. That alone makes Saturday night in Chapel Hill dangerous. The Hurricanes have crushed teams like Pittsburgh and Stanford, but this is a different test - a motivated North Carolina team, at home, in primetime on ABC, with plenty of reasons to believe it can keep fighting.

Miami still has the roster to turn this into a routine win. It is loaded with future NFL talent on both sides of the ball. But North Carolina has the kind of scrappy, stay-alive-until-the-end profile that can create problems when the favorite starts thinking ahead.

And that’s what makes this one feel so familiar. History did its damage here 22 years ago on Halloween Weekend. It could have another shot now.

Miami Faces A Trap-Game Test Fans Can't Ignore

North Carolina is back in the kind of game that can tell you a lot about where it stands in the ACC race, even if the conversation around Week 9 has centered more on Miamis looming test than the Tar Heels themselves. The matchup figures to draw attention because it puts North Carolina in the middle of a prediction market that expects a close game, and those kinds of games usually say plenty about a teams steadiness, its ability to handle pressure and whether it can make an opponent uncomfortable for four quarters.

For the Tar Heels, the bigger storyline is less about the outside noise and more about whether they can turn a difficult spot into a statement opportunity. Miami is being picked to escape with a narrow win, which leaves North Carolina with a chance to challenge that expectation and change the tone around its season, even if the projection still tilts toward the Hurricanes. The setup is simple enough, but these are exactly the sorts of games where the details matter and one timely swing can change how the rest of the week gets discussed. [Read more 🡒]
