UNC Got The Win But One Early Problem Already Stands Out

UNC edges out Western Carolina as new coach Michael Malone sees mixed results in his debut victory.

UNC’s season-opening win over Western Carolina came with plenty of rough edges, but the only number that will live in the record book is 80-72. Michael Malone’s first game as head coach ended with a victory, even if the Heels had to sweat a lot more than expected before pulling away late.

For stretches, UNC looked like the better team and seemed ready to take control. Then Western Carolina kept hanging around, and at one point the Catamounts were poised to grab the lead before they couldn’t quite finish the job.

The turning point came late in the second half when Jaeden Roberts, one of Western Carolina’s leading scorers, fouled out. From there, UNC finally found enough separation to turn a tense game into a slightly more comfortable finish.

One of the clearest positives was the early glimpse of what Terrence Brown and Matt Able can do together. Carolina fans hadn’t really gotten the full picture of that pairing in the preseason, but there were flashes of it against Western Carolina, especially in the first half.

Brown and Able combined for 32 points and four assists, and their best moments came when Brown drew help near the basket and kicked it out to Able for perimeter shots. Able also tried to return the favor at times, though Brown’s shot attempts didn’t fall.

Even so, both guards found ways to make an impact, with Brown doing much of his damage at the free throw line after Western Carolina kept fouling him near the rim.

UNC also got useful minutes from its bench, which mattered because the starting group had a shaky night for long stretches. At one point, Sayon Keita was the only starter in positive territory in plus/minus, and while that stat has limits, the overall picture was hard to ignore.

Malone grew frustrated enough to lean heavily on his reserves, and that second unit responded well enough to help steady things. The bench did more work on the defensive end than in the scoring column, though Maxi Adams still chipped in 10 points.

The depth may not look overwhelming yet in the way some fans might want, but right now it gives UNC a group that can come in, disrupt the other team, and keep the game afloat until the starters settle in.

The biggest concern remains on the glass. Western Carolina beat UNC 41-32 in rebounds and grabbed 13 offensive boards, and not all of those were bad-luck misses or strange bounces.

Some were effort plays the Heels simply didn’t finish. That’s why the need for Cameron Fens to become eligible keeps looming larger.

The source of the problem isn’t just talent; it’s also a matter of wanting the ball more than the other team does. Malone will have to find the right buttons to push, because even if Fens gets on the floor, he can’t solve the issue alone.

Malone will take the win, no question. But this is still a team that looks very much like a work in progress, and that may be the case for a while.

The Heels are going to need time to settle in, and Malone is still adjusting back to the college game while his roster learns what he wants from it. For now, the results may stay messy.

Tar Heels Win Still Left One Early Concern Hard To Ignore

Carolina opened the season with an 80-72 win over Western Carolina, and there were enough encouraging signs to leave the Tar Heels feeling good about the start. Matt Able led the way with 18 points, Neo Avdalas added 13 points and six rebounds, and Maximo Adams chipped in 10 points and four rebounds as the new-look group showed some early scoring balance.

Still, the opener also exposed a problem that will not be easy to brush aside. Western Carolina controlled the glass and outrebounded Carolina 41-32, a gap that stood out even in a victory, and it comes at a time when the Tar Heels are also waiting on an eligibility ruling for Cameron Fens. For a team trying to settle into its rotation early, both issues linger as the schedule moves forward. [Read more 🡒]

Former UNC Star Caleb Wilson Sent A Strong Message After Brutal Loss

Caleb Wilson has wasted no time showing why the Bulls view him as a young piece to build around. After recovering from earlier hand injuries, the former UNC standout has settled in as a productive part of Chicagos rotation, averaging 21.2 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game while carrying himself like a player who expects more from himself and the group around him.

That frustration was on display after Chicagos loss to the Boston Celtics, when Wilson sent a clear message in the aftermath of a brutal defeat. He already entered the league with a strong foundation, having trained with LeBron James before his rookie season, and nights like this only sharpen the spotlight on how much the Bulls are asking of him as they try to keep moving forward. Michael Malone Is Already Changing UNC's Recruiting Ceiling

The early returns on Michael Malones arrival in Chapel Hill keep looking bigger than just a coaching hire. Demarcus Henry, the No. 2 player in the 2027 high school class, has committed to North Carolina, giving the Tar Heels another major recruiting win and a clear sign that Malones reputation is already carrying weight on the trail.

Henry pointed to Malones vision and winning mentality as key reasons for choosing UNC, and the NBA championship-winning coach made it clear the interest was personal. Malone attended many of Henrys games and repeatedly stressed that the forward was a priority for the program, a level of attention that can matter when elite prospects are weighing their next step.
