With the World Cup underway, the comparison game has gotten pretty wild, and North Carolina’s football program has found itself in an unexpected one.
The latest version came from The Athletic’s Chris Vannini, who lined up Team USA with UNC football. On the surface, it sounds like a strange pairing. But Vannini’s point was that both programs have the kind of natural advantages that should make them stronger than they are, while also carrying the weight of bigger, more established identities.
“A program that would seem to have all the right natural geographic resources, but it historically has not cared enough about the most popular sport. The best athletes in America typically don’t play soccer, and UNC will always be first and foremost a basketball school. There have been signs, however, that the level of investment is changing.
“Both the USMNT and UNC hired an accomplished coach in late 2024, hoping to take a step into something greater. One of those has his team playing better in the World Cup than it has in a long time, while the other has made more headlines for his girlfriend and recruiting struggles than on-field success since taking over,” Chris Vannini wrote.
The clearest link between the two programs is the coaching move. UNC’s hiring of Bill Belichick made immediate waves, and it’s the kind of decision that will keep getting revisited until the Tar Heels show real results.
The U.S. men’s national team has at least gotten a better early return. North Carolina, by contrast, hasn’t had that same kind of on-field momentum yet.
