Hubert Davis is stepping down as North Carolina's basketball coach after a tough NCAA Tournament loss to VCU. The Tar Heels' decision to part ways with their coach has sparked widespread reactions, especially after Davis led the team to five consecutive 20-win seasons. Despite this success, the team couldn't capitalize during March Madness, letting a 19-point lead slip away for an early exit.
Davis made an impressive debut by steering the Tar Heels to a national championship game appearance with standout players like Armando Bacot and RJ Davis. He also notched several significant victories over Duke. However, the team struggled to advance beyond the NCAA Tournament's second weekend in the subsequent four years, facing back-to-back first-round exits recently.
Elijah Davis, Hubert's son, quickly responded to the news by sharing a photo on Instagram with a scribbled-out "NORTH CAROLINA" on his jersey. A Chapel Hill native, Elijah transferred from Division III Lynchburg to join his father at North Carolina, redshirting last season and playing limited minutes this year.
His Instagram post read, "right where we need to be. it's His plan and His plan only," capturing a sense of faith and resilience.
Caleb Wilson, a five-star freshman and the team's leading scorer, suffered a thumb injury before the ACC Tournament, missing the postseason. This setback hit hard for a squad that had a 24-6 record before faltering late in the season. Wilson expressed his gratitude on social media, saying, "Thank you for everything Coach Davis, one of the best men and coaches in my life."
Former Tar Heels standout Brady Manek, pivotal in UNC's 2022 Final Four journey, credited Davis as his reason for joining Carolina, while Seth Trimble shared a heartfelt photo with Davis and the coaching staff, captioned "my dawgs."
According to CBS Sports' Matt Norlander, Davis was informed of his dismissal during an emergency meeting with outgoing AD Bubba Cunningham and incoming AD Steve Newmark. Players and staff were called to a 9 p.m. meeting shortly after.
"This was not an easy decision because of Hubert's tremendous character and all he has given to the program, but we must move forward in a way that allows our team to compete more consistently at an elite level," Cunningham stated.
For the first time in nearly 80 years, North Carolina is reportedly looking outside its traditional family for a new coach. Davis, who held a 125-54 record over five seasons, shared his thoughts after his dismissal: "Tonight, I was let go by the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
My desire was to continue to coach here. This opportunity has truly been such a blessing."
