UNC Fires Hubert Davis After Stunning Late Collapse

Hubert Davis' five-year journey as UNCs head coach ends, highlighting a mix of triumphs and challenges that shaped his tenure.

In a surprising turn of events, Hubert Davis has been relieved of his duties as the head coach of North Carolina’s men’s basketball team. This decision comes after five seasons, highlighted by a thrilling run to the 2022 national championship game but marred by recent early exits in the NCAA tournament.

Davis’ position seemed secure until the Tar Heels stumbled at the season's end, dropping their final three games-a streak not seen in over half a century. Reports suggest Davis informed his team of the decision on Tuesday night.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Davis expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to coach at UNC, highlighting the relationships and experiences he cherished. "I am very proud of what we were able to accomplish together," he shared, while also expressing his desire to return to coaching soon.

Despite his departure, UNC will honor the terms of his contract, which was extended last October to run through the 2029-30 season. This includes a $5 million buyout for Davis.

Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham and Executive Associate Athletic Director Steve Newmark recommended the change, which was approved by Chancellor Lee Roberts. Cunningham acknowledged Davis' significant contributions to the program, both on and off the court, stating, "We must move forward in a way that allows our team to compete more consistently at an elite level."

Davis departs with a 125-54 overall record, including an 8-4 mark in NCAA tournament play. However, his record against Top 25 teams and in Quad 1 games was less favorable, highlighting some of the challenges he faced during his tenure.

Newmark praised Davis for instilling a deep love for the university and its traditions in his players. The search for a new head coach is underway, with the assistance of executive search firm Turnkey ZRG and an advisory group of key stakeholders.

Davis' time at UNC was marked by significant highs and challenging lows. The 2022 season was a standout, with a memorable victory over Duke in Coach Mike Krzyzewski’s final home game and a national semifinal win. However, the team struggled to maintain that level of performance, leading to a first-round exit in 2026 despite a substantial lead against VCU.

Injuries, including a season-ending one to standout freshman Caleb Wilson, added to the difficulties of Davis’ final season. As the first Black head coach in the program's storied history, Davis carried the weight of high expectations and the pressure that comes with leading a blue blood program.

As UNC looks ahead, the legacy of Davis’ tenure will be one of both remarkable achievements and lessons learned. The search for his successor will focus on finding a leader who can bring consistency and maintain the program's storied tradition of excellence.
