North Carolina’s worries about Sayon Keita appear to be easing, and the biggest fear around the 5-star center is no longer on the table.
Keita still has not made the move from overseas to Chapel Hill, and that delay had plenty of UNC fans wondering whether a clearance issue could slow things down. But the latest update points in a much calmer direction: the expectation is that he will arrive on campus sometime in August.
According to TarHeel247, there is no exact date yet, but the staff is not concerned about Keita joining the team this summer before classes begin. The situation is being treated as a visa matter, not a looming eligibility problem, and the wheels are already in motion.
“He'll be in Chapel Hill in August at some point,” Andrew Jones said on the Heel Report podcast. “They're getting it taken care of.
There's no concern. He (fellow UNC insider David Sisk) spoke with three different very notable program sources about this a couple of different times, and they're (staff) not concerned at all.
They'd love for him to get there now, because he could start working out and building the chemistry, but they're not concerned at all. It's just a matter of time, and a matter of getting things dealt with.”
That should be a relief for a fan base that has been tracking every detail since UNC landed the commitment from the FC Barcelona youngster. Other schools were in the mix, but Michael Malone and Chuck Martin went to Spain to close the deal.
Keita’s reputation comes with plenty of upside, but he is also viewed as a raw prospect who will need time to develop. That makes Sean May’s presence on the staff especially notable. May knows the Carolina frontcourt as well as anyone, and he helped UNC win a national title under Roy Williams.
For now, the key takeaway is simple: the worst-case scenario is off the board. UNC had hoped Keita might be able to join offseason workouts, but the plan now is for him to arrive, settle in, and get going once he gets to Chapel Hill.
He is not expected to be a superstar for Malone in 2026-27, but he should still be able to contribute right away while he works alongside his new teammates.
