UNC Fans Shocked By NIL Spending Report

As Kansas positions itself among the NIL spending heavyweights, find out where their financial strategy places them in the race for college basketball dominance.

Kansas basketball is sitting in the expensive end of the NIL market, and CBS Sports’ latest roster-spending report makes that clear.

In a recent breakdown by Matt Norlander and Isaac Trotter, the average NIL cost to build a college basketball roster in 2026 across 79 Power Five programs and Gonzaga was listed at $13.5 million. The Big 12 checked in just below that at $12.7 million, placing it fourth among the major conferences behind the SEC ($17.3M), the Big East ($13.6M), and the Big Ten ($12.7M).

CBS Sports divided roster spending into seven tiers, with Tier 1 reserved for teams spending $20 million or more. That group includes Kentucky, Duke, North Carolina, Texas, Louisville, Tennessee, Texas Tech, St. John’s, Michigan, and Florida.

Kansas lands in Tier 2, which covers programs spending just under $20 million, alongside Arkansas, Indiana, and UConn.

The report also notes that the Jayhawks could climb into Tier 1 later in the season if Trey Kaufman-Renn, Tre White, and Melvin Council Jr. are eligible for the full year. As the story put it: “If Kansas is able to roster Trey Kaufman-Renn AND the Jayhawks get Tre White and Melvin Council Jr. eligible for the entire season, our information suggests KU would hit $20 million later this season, but as of this story's publication, the Jayhawks are an eyelash away and literally as close to Tier 1 as possible. (Kansas also boasts the most expensive freshman in college basketball, No. 1 prospect Tyran Stokes).”

That price tag fits the shape of this Kansas roster. Outside of Stokes, the Jayhawks do not appear to have much in the way of future NBA star power, and the transfer class does not include anyone ranked inside the top 50 in 247Sports’ 2026 transfer player rankings.

What Kansas does have is depth, and a lot of it. That kind of quality across the board does not come cheap, and the Jayhawks are clearly paying to put themselves in position to win big this season.

Miami Faces A Trap-Game Test Fans Can't Ignore

North Carolina is back in the kind of game that can tell you a lot about where it stands in the ACC race, even if the conversation around Week 9 has centered more on Miamis looming test than the Tar Heels themselves. The matchup figures to draw attention because it puts North Carolina in the middle of a prediction market that expects a close game, and those kinds of games usually say plenty about a teams steadiness, its ability to handle pressure and whether it can make an opponent uncomfortable for four quarters.

For the Tar Heels, the bigger storyline is less about the outside noise and more about whether they can turn a difficult spot into a statement opportunity. Miami is being picked to escape with a narrow win, which leaves North Carolina with a chance to challenge that expectation and change the tone around its season, even if the projection still tilts toward the Hurricanes. The setup is simple enough, but these are exactly the sorts of games where the details matter and one timely swing can change how the rest of the week gets discussed. [Read more 🡒]

North Carolinas recruiting pitch to Henry has picked up real force in a hurry. The No. 2 overall recruit and top small forward in the 2027 class recently made a visit to Chapel Hill, then cut his list down to four schools, with the Tar Heels still in the mix alongside Arkansas, Kentucky and Louisville.
