The North Carolina Tar Heels are turning heads this season, and it’s not because they’re struggling. Despite some chatter from fans, the team is sitting pretty at No. 18 in the nation with a solid 22-6 record.
Even without star player Caleb Wilson, UNC has clinched three wins in their last four matchups, including a nail-biter against Louisville. Coach Hubert Davis is making all the right moves, and once Wilson returns to full health, the Tar Heels could be even more formidable.
Now, you might wonder if an early exit in the ACC Tournament or NCAA Tournament could spell trouble for Davis. But according to ESPN’s Jeff Borzello, that’s not likely. Davis seems secure in his role, especially after another 20-plus win season.
Borzello’s extensive coaching analysis highlights several categories, and Davis finds himself in the "probably at least a year away" section. It’s clear why.
Despite starting the season on shaky ground, the Tar Heels are now a top-20 team and poised for a deep tournament run with Wilson’s anticipated return. Plus, Davis signed a contract extension in December 2024, keeping him at Chapel Hill through the 2029-30 season, with a hefty buyout of around $5 million.
A couple of NCAA tournament victories could further ease any lingering fan concerns, especially with a top-10 recruiting class on the horizon.
While a national title or Final Four appearance might not be in the cards this year, Davis and his squad have surpassed expectations after last season’s near miss of the NCAA Tournament. The mood around the program has shifted dramatically, thanks in part to players like Wilson and Henri Veesaar stepping up.
Even though Wilson is expected to declare for the NBA Draft, the future looks bright with 5-star recruits Dylan Mingo and Maximo Adams joining next season. Davis seems poised to keep this momentum going and continue building on a promising foundation.
