North Carolina’s 2027 ACC slate brings a little bit of everything, but the headline is hard to miss: five road league games, four at home, and a trip to Stanford that will send the Tar Heels cross-country for the first time since 1998.
The ACC released its 2027 football scheduling matrix on Wednesday, and UNC’s conference path is now set in broad strokes. Carolina will host Duke, Florida State, Virginia and Virginia Tech, while heading to Louisville, N.C.
State, Stanford, Syracuse and Wake Forest. The league released matchups only, so the dates still aren’t attached.
That road-heavy setup means UNC will spend more time away from Chapel Hill than in it during league play. Stanford stands out most, not just because of the distance, but because it’s a familiar but distant memory: the Tar Heels lost the only meeting there, 37-34, in 1998.
There are other road numbers worth noting. UNC is 3-1 at Syracuse, including a 27-10 win in 2025. It has gone 1-3 at Louisville, with the last visit ending in a 39-34 loss in 2012.
At home, Virginia Tech has been a more comfortable matchup for the Tar Heels over the years. UNC is 5-8-2 against the Hokies in Chapel Hill, and it has taken the last two, winning 41-10 in 2022 and 56-45 in 2020.
The 2027 setup is part of the ACC’s current nine-game scheduling format, which began in 2026. The league said the framework was built to ensure every team in the 17-school conference plays a heavy dose of Power Four opponents.
Under that model, schools either play nine conference games plus at least one Power Four non-conference game, or eight conference games plus at least two Power Four non-conference games. Either way, every team gets at least 10 games against major-conference competition each season.
ACC commissioner Jim Phillips said in the league release, “This model reinforces the collective strength of ACC football and supports competitive balance across our 17 programs,”
The 2026 season was still something of a bridge year, with 12 teams playing nine conference games and five playing eight. By 2027, the league shifts further in that direction: 16 of the 17 ACC programs will play nine conference games.
Clemson is the lone school scheduled for eight conference games in 2027, and the league said that designation will rotate among member schools in future seasons.
UNC still has work to do outside the ACC, since it must add at least one Power Four non-conference opponent to meet the league’s overall requirement.
