North Carolina fans have had plenty to process, and not just on the field or the court. The churn around UNC’s programs has gotten so constant that even the people around the teams are getting caught in it.
In football, UNC put together a 105-player roster in 2024. Then came an offseason that saw Bill Belichick add 70 newcomers, which meant 70 departures to clear the way.
After last season, another 60 players were moved out so 60 more could come in. It’s the kind of roster turnover that makes permanence feel optional.
Taron Dickens is part of that same strange reality, committing, arriving on campus, and then decommitting to head somewhere else, all in one offseason.
Basketball has had its own version of the chaos. The 2024-25 team lost nine of its top 10 scorers, with Seth Trimble the only one from that group set to return for the next season.
Looking ahead to 2026-27, only one player from last year’s top 10 scorers is back. Cameron Fens has also been part of the turbulence, caught up in a situation that shifted as judges weighed in on NCAA rule changes.
Even the staff hasn’t been spared. Steve Belichick is on medical leave, Michael Lombardi is on paid administrative leave, and Kim English also ended up in a Taron Dickens-like situation.
