Saturday’s matchup with Duke puts North Carolina in a spot where the margin for error is thin, and the Tar Heels are trying to string together a second straight conference win.
UNC barely got out of last week with a victory over Pittsburgh, a game in which it spent most of the night getting pushed around. Duke arrives after an ugly loss to Georgia Tech, but that doesn’t make the Blue Devils any less dangerous. There are still plenty of reasons for North Carolina to be on alert in Week 7.
On the sideline, Bill Belichick has taken over the defensive play-calling, and that group has been good enough to keep UNC afloat. The Tar Heels have given up 28 and 37 points in back-to-back games, but those numbers tell only part of the story. The offense’s inability to stay on the field has left the defense stuck in difficult spots.
Even with that, Duke’s Manny Diaz deserves a lot of credit for where the program is right now. He’s been underrated throughout his run in Durham, and the results back it up.
Since taking over in 2024, Diaz is 22-10, has put together nine-win seasons in each of his first two years, and won an ACC Championship in 2025. Duke is 4-1 in his third season.
You can make the case that the Blue Devils are working with fewer roster resources, but Diaz still has a clear edge over Belichick.
Duke’s defense enters the game allowing just 14.4 points per contest, a number that looks impressive at first glance. The schedule, though, has to be part of the conversation. In last week’s loss to Georgia Tech, which came in at 1-3, Duke still gave up 28 points and 165 rushing yards.
North Carolina’s offense has been uneven over the first five weeks, but it is a more complete unit than Georgia Tech’s. The biggest reason for hesitation is quarterback Billy Edwards Jr.
Still, this feels like the best opportunity for the veteran to put together a full game at a competent level. Benjamin Hall is also due for a big response, and if he delivers, the rest of the offense should settle in behind him.
If there is one area where confidence tilts toward UNC, it might be the offense for the first time. The defense has been the stronger overall unit, but injuries have taken a toll. The secondary is battered entering this one, and the run defense has been a problem all season, with North Carolina giving up 152 rushing yards per game.
That puts a spotlight on Duke running back Nate Sheppard, who has been one of the best players at his position. He’s averaging 148.6 rushing yards per game, has scored 11 total touchdowns, and is piling up 6.3 yards per carry.
If the Blue Devils can keep producing on the ground at that level, it could become a rough afternoon for the Tar Heels. Through five weeks, the numbers suggest that outcome is a real possibility, especially with Duke’s offensive line having allowed only one sack this season.

Duke Just Gave UNC A Huge Rivalry Week Problem
Dukes rivalry-week injury report has introduced another layer of uncertainty into a matchup that already carries plenty of tension for North Carolina. Running back Nate Sheppard is listed as a game-time decision, and his status matters because he has been Dukes most productive runner and one of the most important pieces of the Blue Devils offense.
If Sheppard cannot go, Duke would likely turn to CJ Campbell Jr., a less proven option with far less production and experience. For UNC, the difference between facing Duke with its lead back available or with a backup thrust into a bigger role could shape how the Tar Heels prepare for one of the seasons most closely watched games. Tar Heels Just Sent A Message Before Duke Showdown
North Carolina mens soccer kept rolling with a 1-0 road win over No. 7 Pittsburgh, a result that added another quality line to an already strong stretch. Max Fisher delivered the decisive goal in the 51st minute, finishing a pass from Bertil Rygaard Hansen and giving the Tar Heels the kind of road result that can sharpen a teams edge this time of year.
The victory stretched UNCs winning streak to five games and snapped Pittsburghs six-match unbeaten run, a nice reminder that the Tar Heels are carrying real momentum into the biggest matchups ahead. With Duke next on the horizon, the timing of this performance matters almost as much as the result itself, since wins like this tend to travel well when the pressure rises. [Read more 🡒]
UNC Gets Another Shot To End Duke Rivalry Frustration
North Carolina gets another crack at a rivalry that has been stubbornly frustrating lately when the Tar Heels meet Duke on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET in an ACC football matchup. The bigger backdrop is simple: the Victory Bell has been out of reach in recent meetings, with Duke finding ways to win close games and leave Carolina looking for answers. Saturday offers the Tar Heels a chance to flip that script, and the broader schedule picture is already taking shape with UNCs 2026 football slate also in view. [Read more 🡒]
