North Carolina looks set to open its season Saturday against TCU in Dublin without defensive coordinator Steve Belichick, who has been on medical leave since very early in training camp.
Steve Belichick was supposed to meet the media after UNC’s first practice on July 29, but he never showed. At the time, a program source told TarHeel247 that Belichick had gotten ill. A few days later, UNC announced that he was on medical leave with no timetable for a return.
Since then, Bill Belichick has been asked about his son four separate times, and his answer has stayed the same: there are no updates, and the staff is handling things together.
That didn’t change Monday during UNC’s TCU Week press conference.
"No updates," Belichick said. "I'm not really going to talk about that situation. We'll work it out."
With game week here, the missing defensive coordinator matters. Only two members of UNC’s coaching staff have ever run a defense before.
Defensive line coach Bob Diaco has held DC jobs at Cincinnati in 2009, Notre Dame from 2010-13, Nebraska in 2017 and Purdue in 2020. He also served as head coach at UConn from 2014-16.
Bill Belichick, meanwhile, was a defensive coordinator for two New York Giants teams that won Super Bowls in the 1980s and for the New York Jets from 1997-99. Since then, he has only been a head coach, including his 24-year run with the New England Patriots, where he won six Super Bowls.
Asked Monday about how involved he might be on defense in Dublin, Belichick made it clear he’s comfortable stepping in if needed.
"Yeah, absolutely," he said. "I called as head coach.
I've called plays on offense, defense, and the kicking game. Again, we have a really good staff.
I have a lot of confidence in them. But if I need to do anything, I feel confident in doing it."
He still wouldn’t say directly whether he’ll be hands-on against the Horned Frogs, but he brushed aside any concern about how the operation will function.
"I have a lot of confidence in our staff, and they can handle a multitude of duties," he said.
That confidence has carried over to the players. Derek McDonald, recently named one of UNC’s captains, said the group has had to adjust, but believes the defense is ready.
"I think everyone has to step up a little bit when there's someone missing," the Syracuse transfer said. "It's definitely been a little bit of a challenge, but I think with the coaches we have and the players we have, everyone has just kind of taken their game to another level and stepped up a little bit and filled in that role."
McDonald also pointed out that the timing of Steve Belichick’s absence has helped UNC get organized before the opener.
"I think understanding what we need to do to fill in that gap definitely helps that it happened a little earlier than the day before the game," McDonald said.
For now, UNC still isn’t offering anything definitive on Steve Belichick or exactly how his duties will be handled. But the concern level inside the Kenan Football Center doesn’t sound especially high.
