North Carolina closes out its final home weekend of the regular season Friday night, and the setup could hardly be bigger: No. 10 Wake Forest is coming to Karen Shelton Stadium with the top spot in the ACC still in play for both teams.
The Tar Heels, ranked No. 9, enter at 9-5 overall and 5-1 in conference play. Wake Forest comes in at 10-5 and 4-2 in the ACC. Carolina and Duke each have one conference loss, while the Demon Deacons have two, including one to Duke.
Before the game, the program will recognize five seniors: Ella Barbacci, Charly Bruder, Caroline Golden, Hope Haynes and Tessa Shahbo. Barbacci, Bruder, Golden and Haynes all would have one more year of eligibility after this season under the new 5-for-5 guidelines if they choose to use it. Shahbo is an Ivy League grad transfer.
The weekend doesn’t stop with Wake Forest. Carolina heads to App State on Sunday for an 11 a.m. matchup.
UNC is coming off a strong home stretch that saw it sweep Boston College and No. 13 Syracuse.
The Eagles were handled 4-0 on Friday, with four different players scoring and the defense posting its sixth shutout of the year. Sunday was tighter, but Charly Bruder delivered the late fourth-quarter goal that sent Carolina to a 2-1 win over Syracuse.
Bruder and Barbacci were central to both victories. Each scored in both games, and Barbacci also assisted Bruder’s winner against Syracuse.
Karen Shelton Stadium has been a fortress for Carolina, which has won 78 times there in 84 games for a .929 winning percentage. The Heels have also been piling up goals in recent weeks, outscoring opponents 30-4 over their last seven games. Carolina leads the ACC with 3.36 goals per game.
Friday’s matchup will be the 87th meeting all-time between Carolina and Wake Forest. The most recent meeting belonged to the Demon Deacons, who won 2-1 in double overtime in Winston-Salem last season.
That result ended a 13-game UNC winning streak in the series. Eliza Perrin had put Carolina ahead with five minutes left in the fourth quarter, but Wake Forest tied it with two minutes remaining and then struck again in the second overtime.
Sunday’s game at App State will be the 14th all-time meeting between the programs. Carolina won the last one in Chapel Hill last season, rolling to a 5-0 victory behind two goals from Bruder and one each from Ryleigh Heck and Dani Mendez. Four of those five goals came before halftime.
Erin Matson is 68-11 at UNC, while Jennifer Averill has a 451-254-3 record at Wake Forest. Matson is 2-1 against Wake Forest, and Carolina is 3-0 all-time against App State under her program history on this page. Wake Forest is 22-53 against UNC, and App State is 0-3 against the Tar Heels.

No. 2 UNC Faces A Huge ACC Test At Dorrance Field
No. 2 Carolinas womens soccer team gets another high-end test Friday night when No. 7 Stanford comes to Dorrance Field, with the match set to stream on ACC Network. It is the kind of late-season showcase that fits the Tar Heels position atop the ACC standings, and it also gives them a chance to keep building on a strong home run in front of a crowd that has watched this group stack up conference honors and national recognition.
Bella Devey has been at the center of that surge, leading the conference in goals, while several other Tar Heels have also earned league and national attention. Carolina has handled Stanford well in the series, but this one still feels like a measuring stick, with the Cardinal bringing one of the leagues best profiles into Chapel Hill and the Tar Heels trying to keep their edge as the schedule tightens. UNC Now Knows Which Syracuse QB Is Coming To Chapel Hill
Syracuse is heading into its Week 8 trip to Kenan Stadium with a clearer quarterback picture, and North Carolina now knows it will be facing Steve Angeli. The Orange have rotated through options at the position this season, but Angeli is the one expected to get the call when the teams meet in Chapel Hill, giving UNC a chance to prepare for a passer who has already logged three appearances this year.
Angelis numbers suggest there is still plenty for North Carolina to try to test, especially with some of the turnover and sack issues Syracuse has dealt with at quarterback. Malachi Nelson and Amari Odom are both ruled out, so the Oranges depth chart is thinner than it might have been earlier in the season, and that makes Angelis role even more central to how Syracuse tries to stay afloat against a Tar Heels defense looking to make the first punch count. Belichicks NFL Future Suddenly Matters A Lot To North Carolina
Bill Belichicks move to North Carolina has already been one of the biggest storylines in college football, but his NFL future is suddenly part of the conversation again for a different reason. According to Adam Schefter, teams around the league have not shown interest in bringing him back, despite the rsum that made him one of the most accomplished coaches in NFL history.
For the Tar Heels, that uncertainty matters because it keeps Belichicks long-term future in Chapel Hill tied to speculation beyond the college game. There have been no official offers and no confirmed negotiations, but the lack of NFL traction and his advancing age have added another layer to a situation that remains open-ended for now.
