North Carolina gets Saturday night’s spotlight against Miami, but the Tar Heels are walking into a brutal assignment after a crushing overtime loss to Syracuse at home. UNC had that game in hand early, leading 20-10 deep into the fourth quarter before letting it slip away, and that collapse also knocked them out of the College GameDay showcase against the Hurricanes.
Miami arrives with a spotless record and a résumé that makes this a steep climb for the Tar Heels. The Hurricanes own a 687-394-19 all-time mark, have gone 21-24 in bowl games, are 3-1 in CFP games, and have claimed five national titles.
Their past is loaded with stars, and when it comes to the best former player, the choice lands on Ray Lewis. He was a two-time Super Bowl champion, two-time defensive player of the year, a 10-time All Pro, and a 13-time Pro Bowler.
Lewis also led the NFL in solo tackles and combined tackles three times and holds five NFL tackling records, including most career solo tackles and most career combined tackles.
On the sideline, Miami is led by Mario Cristobal, the former Hurricanes offensive tackle who has also coached at Oregon and FIU. Cristobal’s career record sits at 103-79, with three conference championships in 16 seasons and a 22-14 mark in ACC play.
Last season, Miami went 10-2 and beat Notre Dame in a huge regular-season win before finishing in a five-way tie for second place. An unusual tiebreaker kept the Hurricanes out of the ACC Championship Game, but they still made the College Football Playoff after Texas Tech beat BYU in the Big 12 title game and the committee moved Miami ahead of Notre Dame.
Miami then ripped through Texas A&M, Ohio State, and Ole Miss before reaching the CFP Championship Game, where Indiana edged the Hurricanes 27-21. Carson Beck threw a pick on Miami’s final offensive play to end it.
For UNC, the issue on offense is obvious: Miami’s defense is nasty. The Hurricanes lead the ACC in points allowed per game, total yards per game, and rushing yards per game.
They are tied for third in the conference with 20 sacks and have given up only 12 touchdowns all season, five of them in the win over FSU. The one soft spot is pass defense, where Miami ranks 12th in the ACC at 239.1 yards allowed per game.
In that tight FSU game, Ashton Daniels threw for four touchdowns and nearly 300 yards. Billy Edwards will need the game of his life for North Carolina to have any real shot.
Miami’s offense presents another problem entirely. The Hurricanes have the ACC’s top passing and receiving attacks behind the Heisman hopeful duo of Darian Mensah and Malachi Toney.
Last season, while at Duke, Mensah completed more than 60% of his throws and totaled 202 yards and a touchdown at Kenan Stadium in a 32-25 Blue Devils win. Toney leads the nation in receptions and ranks third nationally in receiving yards and touchdowns.
Even before the Syracuse loss, the Tar Heels looked outmatched. After it, it’s hard to see this staying competitive for long. Miami is clearly the better team, and unless it barely shows up, this could end up as UNC’s worst loss of the season by the scoreboard, with the Syracuse defeat likely remaining the most painful one overall.

Miami Faces A Trap-Game Test Fans Can't Ignore
North Carolina is back in the kind of game that can tell you a lot about where it stands in the ACC race, even if the conversation around Week 9 has centered more on Miamis looming test than the Tar Heels themselves. The matchup figures to draw attention because it puts North Carolina in the middle of a prediction market that expects a close game, and those kinds of games usually say plenty about a teams steadiness, its ability to handle pressure and whether it can make an opponent uncomfortable for four quarters.
For the Tar Heels, the bigger storyline is less about the outside noise and more about whether they can turn a difficult spot into a statement opportunity. Miami is being picked to escape with a narrow win, which leaves North Carolina with a chance to challenge that expectation and change the tone around its season, even if the projection still tilts toward the Hurricanes. The setup is simple enough, but these are exactly the sorts of games where the details matter and one timely swing can change how the rest of the week gets discussed. [Read more 🡒]
