It looks like Alabama is finding a way to keep Nate Oats, which means he won't be heading to the Tar Heels. With Oats staying put, another rumored target is off the list. Similarly, Vanderbilt's Mark Byington seems set to remain where he is, despite being considered a backup option.
Oats was a popular name in the early discussions for Carolina. From a basketball perspective, the fit was clear.
Oats made a significant impact at Buffalo and has been impressive at Alabama. In his seven years with the Crimson Tide, he's led them to five Sweet 16 appearances, an Elite Eight in 2023, and a Final Four in 2024.
On the court, Oats would be a strong candidate for Carolina. Off the court, however, some Tar Heels fans have their reservations.
Greg Byrne’s tweet confirms Oats isn’t going anywhere, and Alabama fans can breathe easy. The Tide had a solid season, making it to the Sweet 16 before falling to Michigan.
Yet, the program has been surrounded by off-court drama. The Charles Bediako situation was particularly eyebrow-raising.
Bediako, after playing in college and signing with the NBA's San Antonio, attempted a return after a stint in the G League. Oats seemed unfazed by this move.
At Alabama, this might not be a big deal. The Tide's identity as a football powerhouse means basketball issues don't ruffle too many feathers. But at Carolina, such a scenario could be chaotic, and the Tar Heels likely want to avoid that.
Oats has certainly brought talent to Alabama. Players like Labaron Philon Jr. are a testament to his recruiting prowess. However, situations like Aden Holloway's suggest there are areas Oats might need to address more closely.
While Alabama might tolerate these dynamics, Carolina basketball upholds a different standard. Oats staying at Alabama seems like the right call, and Carolina can now look forward to exploring other options.
