North Carolina’s pursuit of 5-star small forward Demarcus Henry just got a lot more complicated, and the timing couldn’t be worse for the Tar Heels.
Henry, one of the headliners in the 2027 class, is already on Louisville’s campus this week for an official visit, his first of what is expected to be several. That matters because Pat Kelsey and the Cardinals are setting the pace early, and once a program gets first crack at shaping a recruit’s visit calendar, everybody else has to play catch-up.
For UNC and Michael Malone, that creates pressure to move quickly. Henry has been a priority for a while, but urgency is starting to matter more than patience. Louisville’s presence changes the temperature of this recruitment, especially with the Cardinals’ reputation for spending aggressively on elite targets.
Henry’s official visit to Louisville comes after he released a Top 8 earlier this summer through Joe Tipton. The list still includes North Carolina, Ohio State, Louisville, Kentucky, BYU, UConn, Arkansas, and Kansas, so the Tar Heels are very much in the mix - but they’re not alone, and they’re not operating in a quiet room.
Ohio State has long been viewed as a serious contender, too, thanks to the family ties. Henry’s older brother Chris plays football at OSU, and his sister Seini is on the Buckeyes’ women’s basketball team. That kind of built-in connection is hard to ignore.
Still, Louisville is the program making the first loud move here, and Kelsey’s approach is impossible to overlook. The Cardinals coach had a blank check for the 2026 class, including major portal spending, and the addition of Seth Trimble only reinforced that reputation. Reports said Louisville paid the former Heel between $2-3 million for this season.
That’s the backdrop UNC has to deal with now. Henry is a 5-star recruit and the top-ranked small forward in the country per the 247Sports Composite, so this is exactly the kind of battle that can turn into a financial and recruiting arms race.
The question now is how quickly North Carolina can get him on campus. The Heels already have 4-star small forward Asa Montgomery scheduled for an official visit on Sept. 25, and there’s a case to be made for bringing Henry in around that same time. Later, on Oct. 30, 5-star prospects Nasir Anderson and Darius Wabbington are set to visit Chapel Hill.
If Henry is in no rush to make a call, stacking visits could work in UNC’s favor. But that all depends on his timeline, and right now Louisville is the program forcing everyone else to react. For the Tar Heels, the message is simple: schedule the visit, get him on campus, and don’t let Kelsey keep stealing the momentum.
