Tommy Lloyd's recent comments have certainly sparked some intrigue, especially for North Carolina fans. With the Tar Heels on the hunt for a new head coach after parting ways with Hubert Davis, Lloyd's name has quickly become part of the conversation.
Lloyd, currently leading Arizona, has had a remarkable run, guiding the Wildcats to the Final Four. It's safe to say his tenure has been successful so far. However, the buzz around UNC's coaching search has been somewhat paused, with both Lloyd and Michigan's Dusty May still in the tournament mix.
This delay might mean that the Tar Heels will have to hold off on naming a new coach until after the Final Four. Yet, the allure of coaching at Chapel Hill could tempt either May or Lloyd to make the leap.
After Arizona's victory over Purdue in the Elite Eight, Lloyd made a statement that certainly caught the attention of Tar Heel supporters. He hinted at Arizona's resilience, even in his potential absence.
"You know, the sun may be shining on this team and me coaching it right now, but when it’s shining on you, you got to fight to protect it and build it," Lloyd remarked.
His commitment to safeguarding and building the program was evident, as he emphasized the enduring strength of Arizona's basketball legacy.
"So that’s what I feel like my number one responsibility is, to fight to protect the program and fight to build it for those who came before me and for those that are going to follow after me, because you know what, Arizona is going to have another good coach after me. I promise you. The place is special."
Lloyd seems to be contemplating a future where he might not be at Arizona, yet he remains focused on the present. Prior to the Sweet 16, he was clear about his dedication to the Wildcats' current NCAA Tournament journey.
"I already have one of the best jobs in the country," Lloyd stated.
"And one thing we talk about in our program all the time -- and I think I've gotten better at it, and I think our team's been crushing it this year -- is just the ability to have full focus and be present in the moment."
For now, Lloyd's focus remains firmly on Arizona, but his comments have certainly added an interesting layer to the ongoing coaching saga at North Carolina.
