Tar Heels Stun With Record-Breaking Lacrosse Streak and Key Retirement News

UNC women's lacrosse celebrates a historic 30-game win streak and honors retired assistant coach Phil Barnes with a $2.5 million endowment, cementing his legacy in shaping champions and leaders.

Carolina women's lacrosse is on a tear, showcasing dominance that's become almost routine. With a staggering 156-50 scoring margin this season and a 30-game winning streak, the Tar Heels are rewriting the record books.

This streak is not just a program record but also the sixth longest in Division I history. A key architect behind this success?

Phil Barnes, the assistant coach who spent two decades building a powerhouse.

Barnes retired in 2025, but his legacy looms large. His contributions were so impactful that a recent fundraising campaign pulled in $2.5 million for the women’s lacrosse operating endowment, with a notable $1 million kick-off from an anonymous donor.

The donor’s condition? Name an assistant coach position after Barnes, a fitting tribute to his influence.

Each sports program at Carolina benefits from its own operating endowment, a financial backbone that ensures teams have the flexibility and support to seize opportunities and sustain long-term success.

Barnes’ trophy case must be bursting at the seams. He’s coached national goalies and defensive players of the year, and twice earned the title of IWLCA Assistant Coach of the Year. With over 300 Carolina victories under his belt, his impact is undeniable.

"Phil made an impact on every Tar Heel he coached by shaping them into elite competitors, exceptional students, and amazing leaders," said athletic director Bubba Cunningham. This sentiment echoes through the decision to name the assistant coach position in Barnes’ honor, a testament to his lasting influence and the generosity of those who support the program.

Head coach Jenny Levy chimed in, expressing gratitude for Barnes’ dedication. "Naming the assistant coach position in his honor is a perfect way to thank Phil for his 20 years of service to the team. I'm grateful to the donors who made this happen; it is an investment in the history and future of our program."

As the Tar Heel community gears up to honor Barnes, his legacy will be front and center when the team faces Boston College on March 21. It’s a moment to celebrate a coach who has shaped the past and future of Carolina women’s lacrosse.
