Tar Heels Pulled Off The Kind Of Comeback Fans Wont Forget

In a comeback showcasing exceptional skill and resilience, Carolina volleyball overcame initial setbacks to defeat Georgia Tech in an electrifying five-set match, marking another milestone for Zoe Behrendt.

No. 25 Carolina volleyball turned Sunday afternoon into a comeback showcase, erasing Georgia Tech in a five-set battle and finishing with a 3-2 win in Chapel Hill.

The Tar Heels dropped the first two sets, 23-25 and 22-25, and the opening stretch felt like a grind from the start. The first two frames were tight throughout, with eight ties and five lead changes combined, and Carolina kept both sets within reach before Georgia Tech edged away late.

One milestone came early in the second set when Zoe Behrendt reached 2,000 assists. She became one of 11 Tar Heels to hit that mark.

Then came the third set, the one that changed everything. Carolina was staring down a 24-20 deficit when Georgia Tech appeared to finish the match with a block.

The Yellow Jackets rushed the floor celebrating, but head coach Mike Schall challenged for a net fault. The call was overturned, Carolina stayed alive, and the building erupted on ‘Dress Like Mike Day,’ with the crowd in bald caps.

From there, the Tar Heels dug in and kept extending the set. They won the next three points to make it 24-24, then survived another match point to get to 25-25, and again at 26-26.

Addison West gave UNC a 27-26 edge with a kill, and then Zoe Behrendt and Lauren Schutter combined on a block to finish the set and keep Carolina in the match.

The fourth set stayed close, but Carolina controlled it from the jump. The Tar Heels never let Georgia Tech draw even, built the lead to 18-11, and forced a Yellow Jackets timeout.

Georgia Tech trimmed the margin to 20-17, prompting Carolina to take a timeout of its own. The teams traded points from there, and UNC carried a 24-20 advantage.

Georgia Tech saved two set points, but Chelsea Thorpe put away a kill to send the match to a fifth set.

Carolina took charge immediately in the decider, jumping ahead 7-2 and never surrendering the lead. Safi Hampton’s 22nd kill of the day pushed the Tar Heels to 13-9, and Thorpe and Laynie Smith finished the job.

Hampton tied her career high with 22 kills, doing it for the second time in a week. Thorpe added 17, Smith finished with 11, and Behrendt posted a double-double with 30 assists and 12 digs. Lauren Schutter led the team with six blocks.

UNC Suddenly Has A Billy Edwards Problem It Cant Ignore

The night at Notre Dame laid bare a few issues North Carolina can no longer treat as one-off problems. Billy Edwards was under constant pressure, the Tar Heels struggled to protect him, and early turnovers helped tilt the game before it ever settled in. With the rushing attack limited and the defense stretched, it was the kind of performance that can leave a coach sorting through more than one concern at once.

Bill Belichick pointed straight at the passing game and the offensive line afterward, and it was hard to argue with the diagnosis. The Tar Heels need cleaner pockets and a steadier start from their quarterback, but they also need the offense to give the defense some help after a night when both sides were exposed. What happened against a top-three opponent may end up looking less like a bad loss than a warning about what still has to be fixed. [Read more 🡒]

UNC Just Changed The Season Debate In A Way Fans Noticed

North Carolinas loss to Notre Dame still left room for a different kind of takeaway. The Tar Heels were beaten 37-26, but for long stretches they were more competitive with the third-ranked Irish than many expected, giving the game a very different feel than a routine blowout against a top-tier opponent.

For a team trying to steady its season, that matters. Even with the mistakes that surfaced along the way, this was the kind of showing that can change how the rest of the schedule is viewed, with the conversation shifting toward whether Carolina can still get to .500 and keep a bowl bid in reach. North Carolina Just Lost A Recruiting Battle Fans Were Watching

Jordan Page made his choice after taking official visits to both North Carolina and UConn, and the five-star wing has now given the edge to the Huskies. The 6-foot-5 standout from IMG Academy is ranked No. 10 overall in the 2027 class, which made this one of the more closely watched recruiting battles for Tar Heels fans looking to see how the program stacked up against another national power for an elite perimeter talent.

For North Carolina, the miss lands with extra weight because Page brings the kind of length and two-way profile that fits the modern game and would have been an appealing addition on the wing. The scouting read on him points to a player whose competitiveness meshes well with UConn's style, even as his offensive game still has room to grow, and that combination helped shape a recruitment the Tar Heels were in until the end.
