The North Carolina men’s soccer team went into Pittsburgh and left with a statement result, knocking off No. 7 Pitt, 1-0, on Friday night.
UNC controlled the tone from the start and never really let the Panthers settle in, even with the scoreline staying tight. The breakthrough finally came in the 51st minute, when Bertil Rygaard Hansen laid the ball across and Max Fisher arrived in stride to drive a low, hard finish past the keeper for the only goal of the match.
That was enough to extend Carolina’s winning streak to five straight. The Heels are now 7-2-3 overall and 3-1-2 in ACC play, while Pitt saw its six-match unbeaten run come to an end and dropped to 8-3-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the conference.
The numbers backed up UNC’s control of the night. Carolina outshot Pitt 13-3 and kept the Panthers off the board for the first time in nine matches. The Tar Heels also had a few chances to add to the lead and make things more comfortable.
Early on, Rygaard Hansen got behind the Pitt defense after a pass from Joschi Schelb, but the keeper handled the shot with his chest. Later, Schelb linked up again with Rygaard Hansen in a dangerous move that ended with Schelb sending a long attempt wide.
After Fisher’s goal, Evans Dappah was slipped in by Schelb and tried to go around the goalkeeper before firing wide, only to have the flag come up for offsides. Schelb also created another opening by cutting through the Pitt defense and forcing a strong save.
Here’s how the key moments unfolded:
9' - Joschi Schelb played in Bertil Rygaard Hansen, who got in behind the Pitt defense, but his shot went straight off the keeper's chest.
19' - The same duo used some nice combination play to allow Schelb to go for goal but his long shot went wide.
51' - Rygaard Hansen squared one and Max Fisher ran into the space and fired low and hard to beat the keeper and put UNC in front.
Carolina now heads to Durham to face Duke at 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 23. The match will air live on ACC Network.

Duke Just Gave UNC A Huge Rivalry Week Problem
Dukes rivalry-week injury report has introduced another layer of uncertainty into a matchup that already carries plenty of tension for North Carolina. Running back Nate Sheppard is listed as a game-time decision, and his status matters because he has been Dukes most productive runner and one of the most important pieces of the Blue Devils offense.
If Sheppard cannot go, Duke would likely turn to CJ Campbell Jr., a less proven option with far less production and experience. For UNC, the difference between facing Duke with its lead back available or with a backup thrust into a bigger role could shape how the Tar Heels prepare for one of the seasons most closely watched games. UNC Gets Another Shot To End Duke Rivalry Frustration
North Carolina gets another crack at a rivalry that has been stubbornly frustrating lately when the Tar Heels meet Duke on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET in an ACC football matchup. The game will be carried on ESPN2 and SiriusXM radio, and it comes with some momentum after UNC recently upset a ranked opponent.
The bigger backdrop is simple: the Victory Bell has been out of reach in recent meetings, with Duke finding ways to win close games and leave Carolina looking for answers. Saturday offers the Tar Heels a chance to flip that script, and the broader schedule picture is already taking shape with UNCs 2026 football slate also in view. [Read more 🡒]
Tar Heels Volleyball Just Set Up A Massive ACC Showdown
North Carolinas volleyball team kept rolling Friday night with a straight-sets win at Notre Dame, a result that marked its third consecutive road sweep and pushed the Tar Heels to eight straight victories. Chelsea Thorpe and Safi Hampton led the way with 10 kills apiece, while Thorpe added seven blocks in another balanced performance from a team that has been hard to slow down away from home.
Now comes the bigger test. No. 23 Carolina heads into a showdown with No. 3 Louisville, and the timing could hardly be better for a Tar Heels group that has built momentum through a steady run of wins and efficient play on the road. It is the kind of matchup that can tell whether this surge is simply a hot stretch or something more lasting in the ACC race. [Read more 🡒]
