In Chapel Hill, the Carolina Tar Heels showcased an offensive masterclass, cruising to a commanding 16-3 victory over the Le Moyne Dolphins at Boshamer Stadium. This win, decided by run-rule, marks the Tar Heels' fifth such victory in just 11 games-a feat they didn't achieve until mid-April last year.
Carolina's lineup was both patient and potent, delivering a season-high 10 walks against just five strikeouts. Leading the charge were Gavin Gallaher and Cooper Nicholson, who each sent balls over the fence, while Colin Hynek added a triple off the wall.
The Tar Heels wasted no time lighting up the scoreboard, posting five runs in the first inning. Nicholson's two-out, bases-clearing double to right center set the tone, bringing in three runs.
Gallaher kept the momentum going with a two-run homer in the second, extending the lead to 7-3 after the Dolphins managed to score a few. Gallaher was a force at the plate, reaching base every time with three walks complementing his home run.
Hynek's triple in the fourth inning brought Macon Winslow home, and a balk allowed the designated hitter to score as well. Hynek matched Gallaher's on-base prowess, reaching safely in all five of his at-bats, adding a double and three walks to his triple.
The fifth inning was the knockout punch. Winslow's bases-loaded single, followed by doubles from Owen Hull and Hynek, added five more runs. Nicholson then sealed the deal with a towering two-run homer to left, capping the score at 16-3.
Four Tar Heels made their collegiate debuts, adding to the day's excitement. Jadyn Nunez and AJ Terry stepped up for their first at-bats, while Jake Cackovic and Riley Leatherman each pitched an inning, combining for three strikeouts and allowing just one baserunner.
Carolina returns for game two of the series on Saturday at 2 p.m. ET, with coverage available on ACCNX and audio on GoHeels.com.
