North Carolina wasted little time setting the tone Friday night, grabbing an early lead and never letting VCU find a way through in a 1-0 win on Dorrance Field at Play2Dream Legacy Stadium.
The decisive moment came in the seventh minute, when Nick Lockermann uncorked a shot from well outside the box and buried it in the upper 90 for his first goal as a Tar Heel. That strike held up as the difference, and the Heels backed it up with a clean sheet while limiting the Rams to just five shots.
UNC also generated plenty going the other way, finishing with 15 shots and piling up chances throughout the night. The pressure started almost immediately. In the second minute, Luca Nikolai sent a cross in from the right side and Ryan Zellefrow rose for a header that clanged off the crossbar.
Zellefrow stayed active after that early miss. In the 23rd minute, he fired two shots in quick succession from the top of the 18, but the VCU keeper denied both. Later in the second half, Zellefrow tried again from the top of the box, only to see a deflection send the attempt over the net in the 53rd minute.
North Carolina kept pressing as the game wore on. Dan Klink, just seconds after entering, headed a shot on frame in the 29th minute, but the VCU keeper pushed it over the bar. Alan Rutkowski then came through in the 68th minute, tipping a free kick over the bar and later saving a corner to preserve the one-goal lead.
Joschi Schelb added two more chances in the 69th minute, with one blocked and the other saved. Luca Nikolai forced a diving stop with a left-footed shot in the 74th minute, and Zellefrow created another opening two minutes later when he slipped around a defender and rolled a shot that the keeper tipped wide. In the 79th minute, Schelb got behind the defense and beat the keeper, but the ball drifted just wide.
VCU managed its first shot in the 28th minute, but it sailed high and wide, and the Rams never seriously threatened the Tar Heels’ advantage.
North Carolina now heads to the West Coast for a matchup with Cal on Sunday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. ET. The game will air on ACCNX.
