Seth Trimble is heading to Louisville, and he made sure Carolina fans heard the reason straight from him.
The former Tar Heel guard announced on social media that he’ll be transferring to Pat Kelsey’s Cardinals after spending the summer weighing a return to college basketball. Trimble said North Carolina was “in the running,” but a full roster at UNC and “other circumstances” pushed him toward another path.
In his message, Trimble didn’t hide how much the program meant to him.
"Carolina, I’ve had the best four years that anybody could ask for. Through thick and thin, I gave my absolute all and represented this university and that jersey every single day because this place means the world to me. And I’ll continue to represent this university for the rest of my life.
I’ve been considering returning to college the whole summer now, and Carolina was always in the running, but with a full roster at UNC, and other circumstances, I won’t be able to return home and will be transferring.
Know that the love I have for this place is irreplaceable, I will forever come back home and honor this place like I’ve done and like the ones before me do, I love you Carolina 🤞🏽🩵"
Trimble had also been in NBA Summer League action with the Washington Wizards, but he said a college return was on the table throughout the summer. If the situation had broken differently, he likely would have been back in Chapel Hill for a fifth season. Instead, Louisville gets the benefit of his decision, and if the current judge’s ruling on eligibility for the Class of 2022 stands, he would gain another season and face his former team twice, including a trip back to the Dean Smith Center in conference play.
It’s a strange twist, and one that says plenty about where college athletics is right now. Trimble is the kind of player North Carolina fans would never want to see in another college uniform, especially not against an ACC rival. But with UNC’s roster already full, the Tar Heels’ hands were tied.
That leaves Louisville with a backcourt addition who should bring stability if the eligibility ruling holds. And it also means one more thing that’s going to feel odd all season: Seth Trimble walking back into Chapel Hill wearing the other side’s colors, even while making it clear that Carolina will always be home.
