Seth Trimble’s next move has Tar Heel fans bracing for a twist they didn’t want to see.
After four memorable seasons at North Carolina, the former UNC standout is being linked to Louisville, with Joe Tipton first reporting the news and Keeping It Heel’s Nick Delahanty confirming mutual interest. Shortly after the article was published, it was announced that Seth Trimble has officially committed to Louisville.
For UNC fans, the part that stings is simple: Trimble stayed loyal to Chapel Hill when it would have been easy to chase a different path through the portal. Now, after entering the portal again this offseason and leaving the door open for a possible return to the Tar Heels, he may be heading to an ACC rival instead.
There isn’t room on UNC’s roster for Trimble to come back next season, especially with Terrence Brown set to take over as the floor general for Michael Malone. Still, because Trimble entered the portal in case he could be “grandfathered in” to the five and five rule, he can play elsewhere if he chooses.
That possibility is what has Carolina fans unsettled. Louisville, under Pat Kelsey, is being viewed as a real landing spot, and the idea of Trimble helping the Cardinals chase a national title next season does not sit well in Chapel Hill.
Trimble’s path to this point has already included a few turns. In 2024, he briefly entered the portal before pulling his name out and making it clear that his “heart and soul belonged in Carolina.” When he entered the portal again this offseason, the hope was that it would keep alive a reunion with UNC.
That reunion never materialized. Trimble entered the NBA Draft, went undrafted, and later signed a Summer League deal with the Wizards. Now, with several programs showing strong interest in him amid the wave of 2022 signees gaining extra eligibility, Louisville has emerged as one of the teams in the mix.
The basketball fit is easy to understand. Kelsey has already worked to load up his roster, including the addition of 5-star transfer Flory Bidunga. Adding Trimble would give Louisville another high-level piece, and there’s also the chance he could land a strong NIL deal along the way.
None of that changes how strange this would feel for UNC supporters. Trimble’s game-winning 3-pointer against Duke is already part of Carolina memory, and that’s the version of him fans would rather keep in mind. The alternative - Trimble in a Louisville uniform, possibly walking back into Chapel Hill as the opposition - is the kind of scenario that hits a little differently.
UNC fans won’t stop wishing him well. But wishing him well while he’s wearing Louisville red? That’s the part that’s hard to swallow.
