Having your jersey honored by the UNC basketball program is no small feat. Out of the thousands who have donned the iconic Carolina Blue, only 51 players have their jerseys hanging in the rafters of the Dean E.
Smith Center. Of these, eight have their numbers officially retired, while the remaining 43 are honored for significant achievements like being named National Player of the Year or winning Olympic Gold.
Now, RJ Davis joins this elite group as his No. 4 jersey is set to be honored.
UNC has announced that Davis will be celebrated during a halftime ceremony on Monday night when the Tar Heels face off against Louisville. This recognition comes just under a year after Davis wrapped up his collegiate career.
So, how did RJ Davis earn this accolade?
While his number will remain in circulation, it will be among the honored jerseys thanks to his stellar performance, particularly during the 2023-2024 season when he was named ACC Player of the Year. That season was a showcase of his dominance and left Tar Heel fans in awe.
Davis's accomplishments go beyond this award. Over five seasons in Chapel Hill, he became one of the most decorated players in the program's history, finishing as the school's second all-time leading scorer.
A pivotal player in the Tar Heels' unexpected run to the national championship game in 2022, Davis consistently improved throughout his college career. He developed into one of the nation’s elite scorers, showcasing his prowess in all areas of the court.
While his professional journey is just beginning, his legacy at North Carolina is already firmly established. The program is quick to honor his contributions by raising his jersey into the rafters, where he will join the ranks of other legendary Tar Heels who have made their mark in Chapel Hill.
