North Carolina Stuns Western Illinois to Advance in NCAA Tournament Thriller

North Carolina advances to the NCAA Tournament's Round of 32 after a commanding win over Western Illinois, with standout performances from Nyla Harris and a solid defensive effort.

In a commanding display at Chapel Hill, the North Carolina Tar Heels showcased their defensive prowess, overpowering 13th-seeded Western Illinois in an 82-51 victory during their NCAA Tournament opener. This win propels them into the Round of 32 for the fourth consecutive year.

The Tar Heels, boasting a 27-7 record, executed a well-rounded game plan against the Leathernecks, who were making their first tournament appearance since 2017. North Carolina saw four players hit double figures, with Nyla Harris leading the charge, notching 17 points and grabbing 12 rebounds for her first career double-double in an NCAA Tournament game.

Carolina's defense was relentless, holding Western Illinois under 50 points, marking the 13th time this season they've kept an opponent below that threshold. Indya Nivar was instrumental on both ends of the court, contributing 11 points, five assists, and four steals, while Lanie Grant added 15 points, including key shots from beyond the arc.

From the onset, the Tar Heels' defense set the tone with three blocks and four steals in the first half. Nivar's defensive efforts were complemented by Harris, who dominated the paint, securing offensive rebounds and capitalizing on second-chance opportunities.

Grant and Nyla Brooks were sharp from three-point range, combining for four first-half baskets. Brooks made an immediate impact off the bench, helping Carolina to an 18-10 lead after the first quarter. Despite a brief scoring lull in the second quarter, the Tar Heels' defense clamped down, forcing Western Illinois into a four-minute field goal drought, allowing North Carolina to extend their lead to 38-24 by halftime.

The third quarter saw the Tar Heels accelerate their pace with a 12-2 run, outscoring the Leathernecks 15-3 early in the half. Nivar continued her stellar play, contributing seven points and three rebounds throughout the quarter. Grant remained a threat from deep, sinking two more three-pointers, as the Tar Heels expanded their lead to 58-33 heading into the final quarter.

Though Western Illinois found some offensive rhythm in the fourth, with Laila Hull perfect from three-point range, North Carolina closed the game strong, draining their final eight baskets to secure the victory.

Looking ahead, the Tar Heels will face a familiar foe in Maryland, a former ACC rival, with a Sweet 16 berth on the line. The matchup promises to be a thrilling contest at Carmichael Arena.
