North Carolina’s basketball season is about to begin Monday night, but the bigger buzz around the Tar Heels came last Friday, when Demarcus Henry announced his commitment to UNC.
Henry, the No. 2 player in the 2027 high school class, gives Michael Malone a major early recruiting win and adds another sign that North Carolina is ready to land elite talent again. ESPN lists Henry as the highest-rated recruit to choose UNC since Cole Anthony committed in 2019. The only player ranked ahead of him, technically, is Harrison Barnes, who was the No. 1 player in 2010.
For Malone, this is exactly the kind of battle he was expected to win. His NBA résumé gives him instant credibility on the recruiting trail, and that matters when a player like Henry can go anywhere and is being courted with big money from multiple programs in the NIL era.
Henry said the fit with Malone and UNC stood out immediately.
"Their vision for me fits exactly what I'm looking for," Henry told ESPN. "Coach Malone and I are like-minded.
He constantly emphasizes chasing greatness, and I really like his winning mentality. He won an NBA championship at the highest level, with the best players in the world, and I want to learn from him."
He also pointed to how much the staff made him feel like a top priority.
"Coach Malone, Coach Chuck Martin, and Coach Sean May always emphasized that I was a priority. I could always feel how much they believed in me," Henry said.
"Coach Malone was relentless in recruiting me. He was in Mexico at my USA Basketball games; he was at almost every one of my games, and he was at my school on the first day of contact.”
That kind of attention matters, especially with a recruit this coveted. North Carolina has the brand and the resources to stay in the mix for top players, but Henry’s commitment suggests Malone can give the program something extra in these head-to-head fights: a coach with championship pedigree who can make elite prospects feel like the center of the plan.
And if this is the start, the Tar Heels could be in position to win plenty more of these battles.

Tar Heels Win Still Left One Early Concern Hard To Ignore
Carolina opened the season with an 80-72 win over Western Carolina, and there were enough encouraging signs to leave the Tar Heels feeling good about the start. Matt Able led the way with 18 points, Neo Avdalas added 13 points and six rebounds, and Maximo Adams chipped in 10 points and four rebounds as the new-look group showed some early scoring balance.
Still, the opener also exposed a problem that will not be easy to brush aside. Western Carolina controlled the glass and outrebounded Carolina 41-32, a gap that stood out even in a victory, and it comes at a time when the Tar Heels are also waiting on an eligibility ruling for Cameron Fens. For a team trying to settle into its rotation early, both issues linger as the schedule moves forward. [Read more 🡒]
Former UNC Star Caleb Wilson Sent A Strong Message After Brutal Loss
Caleb Wilson has wasted no time showing why the Bulls view him as a young piece to build around. After recovering from earlier hand injuries, the former UNC standout has settled in as a productive part of Chicagos rotation, averaging 21.2 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game while carrying himself like a player who expects more from himself and the group around him.
That frustration was on display after Chicagos loss to the Boston Celtics, when Wilson sent a clear message in the aftermath of a brutal defeat. He already entered the league with a strong foundation, having trained with LeBron James before his rookie season, and nights like this only sharpen the spotlight on how much the Bulls are asking of him as they try to keep moving forward. Bill Belichick May Have Exposed Why UNC Nearly Took Down Miami
North Carolinas near-upset of No. 1 Miami offered a pretty clear offensive blueprint, and Bill Belichick may have been the one to point it out. The Tar Heels found plenty of room to operate against a Hurricanes defense that stayed in its base look for much of the night, and Billy Edwards Jr. took advantage with 341 passing yards and four touchdowns as UNC piled up five scores against a top-ranked opponent.
The result still came down to the kind of late mistake that can swing a tight game, with a fourth-quarter fumble helping turn a winnable night into another loss. At 4-4, UNC still needs to win at least two of its remaining games to reach bowl eligibility, but the bigger ripple may be what Belichicks postgame read means for anyone else preparing to face Miami, including Notre Dame.
