There’s a new tone in Chapel Hill, and it starts with Michael Malone.
Since taking over as North Carolina’s head coach, Malone has changed the feel around the Tar Heels, and the early signs point to accountability and togetherness making an immediate imprint on the roster. That matters now more than ever, because this UNC team is built around turnover. The Tar Heels have 11 newcomers, and with that kind of reset, chemistry and cohesion won’t arrive automatically.
That’s where leadership becomes the defining piece. North Carolina needs voices it can trust, especially in the opening stretch of the season before the group settles into a rhythm. Malone has pushed multiple players to step into that role, and Jaydon Young is one of the guys answering the call.
Young transferred from Virginia Tech to North Carolina last offseason, and he’s talking about becoming a more vocal presence. He may not be expected to log heavy minutes, but his value goes beyond the box score. As a senior entering his second year in Chapel Hill, he brings a steady hand and a better read on how things work around the program.
That gives him a lane to help in different ways. He can guide younger teammates as they adjust to the culture and the level of competition. He can also be useful from the bench, spotting things in real time and passing along what he’s seeing during games.
For a roster this new, that kind of voice matters. Many of these players are still early in their college careers, and North Carolina’s vocal confidence should grow once conference play arrives. But early on, the Tar Heels need leadership to set the tone while the group builds its chemistry from scratch.

Belichick Makes Clear What Matters Now For UNC Football
Bill Belichick said the North Carolina football programs focus right now is less about the noise around it and more about getting the operation where it needs to be. With the Tar Heels navigating investigations and personnel changes, he framed the moment as one centered on doing things the right way and addressing the areas flagged by outside counsel.
Belichick also made clear how limited his role has been in the process, saying he was only involved in answering some questions while the legal details were handled by lawyers. For North Carolina, the message was less about the headlines themselves than the work still ahead, and what the program chooses to do next in response to them. [Read more 🡒]
