Michael Jordan Just Gave UNC Fans Another Reason To Be Proud

Michael Jordan honors his mother's legacy with a record-breaking $10 million donation to propel social work initiatives at UNC.

Michael Jordan is making another massive mark on North Carolina, and this one has nothing to do with jump shots or championships.

The Tar Heel great has committed $10 million to the UNC School of Social Work in honor of his mother, Deloris P. Jordan. It’s the largest single gift in the school’s history, and the money is set to support students, families, and communities in North Carolina and around the world.

UNC is using the gift to expand the Global Social Development Innovations Center, which will now carry Deloris P. Jordan’s name as the Deloris P.

Jordan Global Social Development Innovations Center. The donation will also support the Jordan Institute for Families, which Michael Jordan and his family helped establish in 1996, and create scholarship opportunities for students working toward Master of Social Work degrees.

The university has already launched the Jordan Family Scholars program as part of the commitment. Ten students were chosen as the first Jordan Family Scholars, and each received a $12,500 scholarship.

Jordan explained the meaning behind the gift in a statement released by UNC:

"My mother has always believed in the power of helping children, families, and communities, and she has spent her life putting that belief into action. Honoring her through this gift to the UNC School of Social Work is truly meaningful to my family and to me."

For Jordan, the gesture also reinforces something he’s made clear for years: Chapel Hill still matters deeply to him.

His connection to UNC has never been just about what he did on the court more than four decades ago. This latest commitment stretches that legacy in a different direction, one that reaches well beyond basketball.

Deloris Jordan’s work has included founding the Kenya Women and Children's Wellness Centre in Nairobi, and UNC’s renamed center will help keep her mission in front of future generations. The gift also aims to open doors for future social workers and strengthen programs that serve families and communities.

Dean Smith’s old message about former players staying connected to the university still echoes here. He never pressed them for money, but he did want them to remain part of the Carolina family long after their playing days ended. Jordan has done that in a big way, and now his mother’s name will be tied to that effort too.

UNC Just Took A Big Step In Building Belichicks Football Operation

North Carolinas football overhaul is moving into a more formal phase, with the school bringing in ZRG Turnkey to run the search for its next football general manager. The hire fits the larger push around Bill Belichicks program, where the Tar Heels are building out the kind of front office structure more commonly seen in the NFL than in college football.

Sean Magee, ZRG Turnkeys vice president of GM solutions and a former Michigan football general manager, will also serve as a consultant to support the GM role, athletic director Steve Newmark and Belichick. Magees background stretches across the college and pro game, including stops with Michigan, the Chicago Bears and Navy, giving UNC an experienced hand as it shapes the operation around its new head coach. UNC Faces One Pittsburgh Problem That Could Dig The ACC Hole Deeper

North Carolina heads into another demanding ACC test this week, and the setup does not get any easier after the Tar Heels ran into No. 3 Notre Dame. Now it is No. 25 Pittsburgh on the schedule, a team that has already shown it can win tight games and put real pressure on a defense for four quarters.

The Panthers offense runs through sophomore quarterback Mason Heintschel, whose production has made him one of the leagues most dangerous passers and helped Pittsburgh stay on the right side of several close calls. With two games already decided by five points or fewer, including a recent win over Virginia Tech, this is the kind of matchup that can deepen North Carolinas ACC trouble if it cannot slow the passing game early. UNC Football Has A Bigger Problem Than Its On-Field Progress

North Carolinas football program has made enough progress under Bill Belichick to keep the conversation going, and bowl eligibility is still within reach. Even so, the bigger question around the Tar Heels is not just whether the team is improving on the field, but whether that improvement is enough to matter in a place where basketball still sets the standard for attention and expectation.

A recent take from The Athletic captured the unease around the programs current standing, pointing out that the Tar Heels still have a long way to go before they feel like a true force in college football. The concern is less about one seasons results than about fan engagement, which appears to remain muted compared with the energy that follows Carolina basketball, leaving the football side with a tougher climb than the win-loss record alone suggests.
