Kansas' Darryn Peterson Stuns Fans with Bold Statement on Missing Games

Amidst rising criticism and speculation, Kansas' Darryn Peterson clears the air about his game absences, reaffirming his dedication to the team and sport.

Darryn Peterson has finally spoken out about the criticism surrounding his inconsistent availability, acknowledging the frustration but affirming his unwavering commitment to Kansas.

The situation came to a head after the Jayhawks’ significant win over Arizona, when Peterson benched himself during the second half against Oklahoma State, clocking just 18 minutes on the court-his shortest stint this season.

This decision sparked a wave of national criticism, with notable figures like Stephen A. Smith advising NBA teams to reconsider drafting the projected No. 1 pick.

Despite missing Kansas’ marquee win, Peterson returned to Allen Fieldhouse with his usual calm presence.

“On the court, no, I probably don’t smile,” Peterson shared with ESPN. “I think I smile a good amount off the court.”

Peterson conceded that the season hasn’t gone as planned.

“Everybody’s got an opinion on it,” he said. “But basketball is my life. If I could have been out there every game this year, I would have.”

Kansas has struggled to find its rhythm amid the uncertainty of Peterson’s availability. They scored 82 points without him against Arizona but only managed 68 in a home loss to Cincinnati, even with Peterson playing 32 minutes.

Jayhawks coach Bill Self has remained steadfast, calling Peterson “the best player” he’s had. Statistically, Peterson’s usage rate is comparable to that of Stephen Curry, and he’s shooting an impressive 43.1% from beyond the arc.

With March approaching, Kansas is still in search of consistency as they push for a Big 12 title and a tournament bid.
