Josh Downs Just Put UNC Fans On Trade Watch

Amid a roster shakeup, the Indianapolis Colts' receiver Josh Downs seeks a new team, setting the stage for potential interest from NFL contenders before the trade deadline.

Josh Downs has moved to the center of the NFL rumor mill, and the former North Carolina standout might be the next piece to go as the Indianapolis Colts continue to reshape their roster.

Downs requested a trade on Wednesday, adding another layer to a week that has already seen the Colts send away Quenton Nelson and DeForest Buckner. Indianapolis has been operating like a team willing to deal, and Downs along with Jonathan Taylor have both surfaced in trade talk.

The timing makes sense from a contract standpoint. Downs is 25 and in the final year of his rookie deal, which means he’s set to become a free agent this offseason.

On the field, he has continued to produce in 2026. Through seven games, Downs has 26 catches for 307 yards. For his NFL career, he has 224 receptions for 2,447 yards and 11 touchdowns across four seasons.

Before he became an NFL trade candidate, Downs built his name at North Carolina as one of the program’s most reliable pass catchers. In 2020, he totaled seven receptions for 119 yards and three touchdowns.

Then came the big jump in 2021, when he exploded for 101 catches, 1,335 yards and eight touchdowns. In 2022, he followed that with 94 receptions for 1,029 yards and 11 touchdowns.

That run was enough to make him a third-round pick by the Colts in the NFL Draft.

If Indianapolis does move him, there should be no shortage of interest. Contending teams could come calling, with the Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers mentioned as possible landing spots.

Downs’ track record has been obvious from college to the pros: he gets open, he makes plays, and he has held up as a dependable option. The source also describes him as the best receiver North Carolina has produced in recent years.

Meanwhile, North Carolina may be looking at the next name in that pipeline. Jordan Shipp is the top receiver on the current roster and could be the program’s next wideout headed for the NFL.

Shipp’s development has picked up over three seasons in Chapel Hill. In 2024, he had nine receptions for 114 yards and a touchdown. He broke out in 2025 with 60 catches for 671 yards and six touchdowns, and he’s kept rolling in 2026 with 41 receptions for 543 yards and two touchdowns in seven games.

If Downs is dealt, his next chapter could begin soon. And back at North Carolina, Shipp is the one carrying the torch with a possible 2027 NFL Draft decision looming later on.

Bill Belichick's Real Power At UNC May Be Coming Into Focus

North Carolinas front office reshuffling has turned into one of the more revealing storylines around the Tar Heels football program. The school suspended Michael Lombardi from his general manager role on July 27 amid an HR investigation, and he formally resigned in early September, leaving the program to sort through a job that has become increasingly important as college football keeps borrowing more from the pro model.

The search for a replacement is already underway, with former Michigan GM Sean Magee helping consult on the process. What makes the next hire especially interesting is the possibility that the role could be built to report to both athletic director Steve Newmark and head coach Bill Belichick, a structure that would say a lot about how much influence Belichick is expected to wield in Chapel Hill and how UNC wants its football operation to function moving forward. UNC Misses On Five-Star As This Recruitment Slipped Away Fast

North Carolina had a real shot in the mix for five-star prospect Asa Montgomery, but the rising 2027 guard is headed to Duke instead, narrowing one of the more closely watched recruiting battles on the board. Montgomery picked the Blue Devils over a group that included UNC, UConn, Georgia Tech and LSU, a reminder of how quickly elite recruiting can turn when a player starts separating himself from the pack.

For the Tar Heels, the miss adds another layer to a rivalry that tends to show up in the recruiting lanes long before it ever reaches the court. Dukes class keeps building around top-end talent, while UNC now has to keep pressing ahead with other targets and make up ground elsewhere in a cycle where every high-end decision matters. Tar Heels Just Got A Troubling Wake-Up Call Before The Real Games

North Carolina got its final preseason test Friday night, and it was a reminder that the margin for error will shrink fast once the real games begin. The Tar Heels escaped Charlotte 89-82 in overtime, leaning on Terrence Browns 27 points and a late defensive surge after trailing by as many as 15 in the first half.

The comeback was encouraging, but the early hole was just as telling for a team trying to settle in before the schedule turns serious. North Carolina did manage to slam the door late, forcing Charlotte to miss its final seven shots in overtime, yet the game still offered an uneasy snapshot of where the Tar Heels are heading into the season: capable of bursts, but not yet fully in command for long stretches.
