Jaden Jefferson Just Gave UNC A Dangerous New Special Teams Weapon

Jaden Jefferson's electrifying 98-yard kickoff return not only ended UNC's scoring drought but also set the stage for his promising future as the ACC Specialist of the Week.

One kick was enough for Jaden Jefferson to make his mark.

The true freshman’s only touch in a college game turned into a 98-yard opening kickoff return to start the second half, a play that changed the feel of the day and put Jefferson on the conference radar in a hurry. On Monday, the Atlantic Coast Conference named him ACC Specialist of the Week, giving him his first collegiate honor.

Jefferson’s return stood out not just because of the distance, but because it came on his first time touching the football in a college game. He took the opening kickoff of the second half all the way to the house, and it looked like the kind of burst that can change a special teams unit fast.

UNC also had reason to take note beyond the individual award. After the game, Bill Belichick said the Tar Heels’ special teams unit was bad a season ago, then joked that Jefferson had more yards on that single return than the team had all last season. The line was delivered as a joke, but it still underscored just how rough that unit had been.

There was at least one clear bright spot for North Carolina: Jefferson may have given the Tar Heels a return man they can build around.

He also became the first Tar Heel since Chris Culliver to bring back a kickoff for a touchdown. Culliver had two kickoff return touchdowns in 2024 and added another in the Fenway Bowl against UConn on December 28, 2024. Jefferson’s score ended a 644-day drought for UNC on special teams, a long stretch that finally snapped with one explosive play.

The Tar Heels would have liked a different result in the game, but Jefferson’s debut as a return man gave them something to feel good about. If he keeps bringing kicks back like he did against Notre Dame, opponents may not be eager to send the ball his way for long.

UNC Heads Into Michael Malones Debut With One Big Lineup Problem

Michael Malones first UNC exhibition is finally here, and it comes with the kind of lineup puzzle that usually tells you plenty about a new coachs first fall in Chapel Hill. Against USC, the Tar Heels will make their first on-court appearance since March, giving Malone an early look at how his roster pieces fit together after a long offseason of questions about roles, spacing and who belongs where.

The biggest decision appears to be on the perimeter, where UNC has more options than obvious answers at both wing and point guard. Neoklis Avdalas, Matt Able, Terrence Brown Jr., Isaiah Denis, Angelo Brizzi, Jarin Stevenson and Maximo Adams are all part of the conversation, and the uncertainty around who starts and who settles into what role is already one of the defining storylines of the new era. Malone does not need to solve everything in one exhibition, but he does need to start narrowing the picture. [Read more 🡒]

Belichick Has A Chance To Silence Doubts With UNC's Biggest Test Yet

Bill Belichicks first season in Chapel Hill has already offered a little of everything, from signs of progress on the field to the kind of distractions that can make a rebuild feel heavier than it should. North Carolina did show some life in 2024, including a competitive loss to No. 3 Notre Dame, but the broader picture has still been clouded by off-field investigations and a home atmosphere that has not always matched the stakes.

Now comes a useful measuring stick against No. 25 Pittsburgh, a game that feels bigger than just another conference date. A win would not solve everything, but it would give the Tar Heels a tangible step forward and a chance to show that Belichicks arrival is beginning to translate into something sturdier than hope. UNC Just Added Another Huge Piece For Courtney Banghart's Future Core

Courtney Banghart has added another promising building block for North Carolinas future, and this one comes with plenty of pedigree. Micah Ojo, a highly regarded wing in the 2027 recruiting class, has committed to the Tar Heels, giving UNC an early win on the recruiting trail with a player who already arrives with a decorated rsum and a reputation for impacting games at both ends.

Ojo said the fit at North Carolina stood out because of the academics, the coaching staff and the team environment, a familiar formula for Bangharts staff when it lands a coveted prospect. For a program that continues to think ahead while staying competitive in the moment, Ojos pledge adds another high-upside piece to a core that could keep taking shape in Chapel Hill. [Read more 🡒]
