Chapel Hill's Changing of the Guard: Hubert Davis and UNC Part Ways
In a surprising turn of events, Hubert Davis and the North Carolina Tar Heels have decided to part ways, concluding his five-year head coaching stint. Davis, deeply connected to UNC as a former player and coach, leaves a legacy marked by both triumphs and challenges.
A Tar Heel Through and Through
Davis’ journey with UNC began long before his coaching days. Born in Winston-Salem, he grew up in Virginia and committed to play under the legendary Dean Smith, following in the footsteps of his uncle, Walter Davis. As a player from 1988-92, Davis left an indelible mark, holding the program’s career three-point percentage record at 43.5%.
His professional career kicked off when he was drafted 20th overall by the New York Knicks in 1992. Over 12 NBA seasons, Davis maintained his sharpshooting prowess, ranking second in NBA history for career three-point percentage at 44.1%.
Post-retirement, Davis transitioned into coaching and broadcasting, spending time with the Dallas Mavericks and ESPN before returning to UNC as an assistant coach under Roy Williams in 2012. When Williams retired, Davis was the natural choice to take the helm.
The Rollercoaster Ride of Coaching
Davis’ tenure as head coach saw a mix of highs and lows. His debut season (2021-22) was nearly storybook, with UNC reaching the national championship game after a memorable run that included victories over Duke and defending champion Baylor. However, the Tar Heels fell just short against Kansas in the finals.
The following season (2022-23) was a stark contrast, as UNC became the first preseason No. 1 team to miss the NCAA Tournament, finishing with a 20-13 record.
In 2023-24, Davis led a resurgence, guiding UNC to an ACC regular-season title and earning Coach of the Year honors. Despite a strong showing, their NCAA Tournament run ended in the Sweet 16 against Alabama.
The 2024-25 season saw UNC finish 23-14, but early exits in both the ACC and NCAA Tournaments left fans wanting more.
A Tumultuous Final Season
Entering the 2025-26 season, expectations were high. Despite impressive wins over Kansas and Kentucky, the team faced adversity with the loss of freshman standout Caleb Wilson. The Tar Heels finished the regular season 23-7, with Davis becoming the only coach in program history to win 20 or more games in each of his first five seasons.
However, the season ended on a sour note. After a narrow loss to Clemson in the ACC Tournament, UNC faced a shocking NCAA Tournament upset against VCU, squandering a 19-point lead. This marked their second such collapse under Davis, sparking questions about his coaching decisions.
Looking Ahead
With Davis’ departure, UNC is poised to conduct its first national coaching search in over seven decades. The program, known for promoting from within, now looks outward for new leadership. As the Tar Heels embark on this new chapter, the legacy of Hubert Davis remains a testament to his deep connection and contributions to Carolina basketball.
