Hubert Davis is gearing up his North Carolina squad for a challenging NCAA Tournament opener against VCU, highlighting the Rams' explosive athleticism and scoring prowess. After a tough loss to Clemson in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals, the Tar Heels secured a No. 6 seed in the South Region and are set to face the No. 11 seed Rams at Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina.
VCU boasts an impressive 27-7 record, spearheaded by Terrence Hill Jr., who is putting up 14.4 points per game, along with 2.5 rebounds and 2.8 assists. The Rams are known for their dynamic play, and North Carolina will need to lean on Seth Tremble and Henri Veesaar to step up, especially after losing standout freshman Caleb Wilson to a broken thumb earlier this season.
In his pre-game press conference, UNC head coach Hubert Davis provided insights into VCU's game plan, describing them as a versatile and athletic team. He emphasized the importance of defending their guards effectively.
“VCU can certainly shoot from beyond the arc, but they’re also skilled at penetrating the paint, putting immense pressure on the rim, and getting to the charity stripe,” Davis noted. “They lead the Atlantic 10 in both free throw attempts and conversions. So, for us, it’s crucial to defend without fouling and to finish every possession with a solid box-out.”
North Carolina's defense has been a concern as the season progressed, and the Tar Heels will need to be at their defensive best to advance past the first round. Davis is also focusing on keeping his players relaxed and focused, taking them to the driving range to ease the pre-tournament tension.
“I want the team to dive into our strategy, but also to enjoy the moment,” Davis shared. “Playing for North Carolina in the NCAA Tournament is a privilege and an honor, and I want the players to embrace that.”
Despite facing adversity this winter, UNC is embracing their No. 6 seed status. While the expectations may not include a Final Four appearance, the Tar Heels are ready to give it their all in the Big Dance.
