Chapel Hill, N.C. - Erik Paulsen had a standout performance at the plate, leading the Carolina baseball team to a dominant 13-3 victory over VCU on Wednesday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium.
The No. 8 Tar Heels (8-1-1) were relentless in their offensive assault, scoring multiple runs in four of the seven innings they played. This marks their fourth run-rule win of the season, putting them on track to surpass last year's record of eight.
Paulsen was the star of the show, going 4-for-4 and smashing two home runs. This marks his second career multi-homer game, the first since his time with Stony Brook last March. Impressively, he's the first Tar Heel to achieve this feat this year.
Entering 2026 with 13 career home runs, Paulsen has already added four more in Carolina blue, showing no signs of slowing down. Reflecting on his success, Paulsen credited his improvement to focusing on timing and approach, with gratitude to his coaches for their guidance.
But Paulsen wasn't the only one in the zone. The Diamond Heels' lineup delivered a season-high 13 hits, including seven for extra bases, while striking out only twice.
Shortstop Jake Schaffner also shined, hitting three doubles and driving in two runs. Designated hitter Colin Hynek joined the home run party with his first of the season in the fourth inning.
On the mound, true freshman Jackson Rose had a career-best outing. The Woodstock, Ga., native pitched three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and one walk, with his fastball reaching a personal best of 93 mph.
Starter Boston Flannery contributed 2.1 innings, giving up just one unearned run. His defensive skills were on display as he picked off two VCU runners, keeping the bases clear.
Looking ahead, the Tar Heels are set to host a weekend series against Le Moyne, who are making their DI debut. These teams have a history dating back to 1978, with their last meeting in 2003.
The series kicks off on Friday at 4 p.m. ET at Boshamer Stadium.
