Duke Just Gave UNC A Huge Rivalry Week Problem

As Duke gears up for a crucial rivalry clash against North Carolina, the uncertainty surrounding star running back Nate Sheppard looms large, with his potential absence threatening to reshape the dynamics of the game.

Duke’s offense may be on the verge of a major late-week shakeup, and it all centers on Nate Sheppard.

The Blue Devils’ sophomore running back is listed as a true game-time decision just hours before the matchup with North Carolina, and that uncertainty hangs over everything Duke wants to do offensively. After the loss at Georgia Tech, Duke already needs its most reliable playmaker to be available. If Sheppard is limited - or unavailable altogether - the entire shape of the attack changes.

That’s because Sheppard has been doing far more than carrying the ball. He rushed for 99 yards on 27 carries with two touchdowns, and he also paced Duke in both receptions, with seven, and receiving yards, with 91. Across the season, his production has been the engine of the Blue Devils’ offense.

The numbers underline just how central he is. Sheppard is sixth in the nation with 118 carries and 743 rushing yards, and he’s tied for seventh with eight touchdowns.

Duke has 1,133 rushing yards as a team, and Sheppard owns 743 of them. He also has eight of the team’s 12 rushing touchdowns.

On top of that, he ranks second on the team with 17 receptions, third with 161 receiving yards, and he leads Duke with three receiving touchdowns.

When Duke leans on the run game, Sheppard is the clear focal point. There isn’t much mystery there.

The offense has been built around him, and North Carolina knows exactly how much would change if he can’t go. The Tar Heels enter as underdogs, and a Duke offense without Sheppard would look a lot different than the one they’ve prepared for.

Zach Pearson of Duke Roundtable reported earlier in the day that Sheppard was a game-time decision and laid out the ripple effect for the Blue Devils. If Sheppard is out, the burden shifts heavily elsewhere, and Duke’s options narrow fast.

The only other Duke running back with a reception this season is RB2 CJ Campbell Jr. The senior has five catches for 29 yards, so he’s not much of a threat in the passing game. Still, he’s the only other player on the roster with triple-digit rushing yards.

Campbell Jr. has carried the ball 42 times for 185 yards, averaging 4.4 yards per carry compared with Sheppard’s 6.3. He brings experience, having been a college football player since 2022, but this is his fourth team in the last four years. He also hasn’t scored since his 14-touchdown season with FAU in 2024.

Tar Heels Just Sent A Message Before Duke Showdown

North Carolina mens soccer kept rolling with a 1-0 road win over No. 7 Pittsburgh, a result that added another quality line to an already strong stretch. Max Fisher delivered the decisive goal in the 51st minute, finishing a pass from Bertil Rygaard Hansen and giving the Tar Heels the kind of road result that can sharpen a teams edge this time of year.

The victory stretched UNCs winning streak to five games and snapped Pittsburghs six-match unbeaten run, a nice reminder that the Tar Heels are carrying real momentum into the biggest matchups ahead. With Duke next on the horizon, the timing of this performance matters almost as much as the result itself, since wins like this tend to travel well when the pressure rises. [Read more 🡒]

UNC Gets Another Shot To End Duke Rivalry Frustration

North Carolina gets another crack at a rivalry that has been stubbornly frustrating lately when the Tar Heels meet Duke on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET in an ACC football matchup. The game will be carried on ESPN2 and SiriusXM radio, and it comes with some momentum after UNC recently upset a ranked opponent.

The bigger backdrop is simple: the Victory Bell has been out of reach in recent meetings, with Duke finding ways to win close games and leave Carolina looking for answers. Saturday offers the Tar Heels a chance to flip that script, and the broader schedule picture is already taking shape with UNCs 2026 football slate also in view. [Read more 🡒]

Tar Heels Volleyball Just Set Up A Massive ACC Showdown

North Carolinas volleyball team kept rolling Friday night with a straight-sets win at Notre Dame, a result that marked its third consecutive road sweep and pushed the Tar Heels to eight straight victories. Chelsea Thorpe and Safi Hampton led the way with 10 kills apiece, while Thorpe added seven blocks in another balanced performance from a team that has been hard to slow down away from home.

Now comes the bigger test. No. 23 Carolina heads into a showdown with No. 3 Louisville, and the timing could hardly be better for a Tar Heels group that has built momentum through a steady run of wins and efficient play on the road. It is the kind of matchup that can tell whether this surge is simply a hot stretch or something more lasting in the ACC race. [Read more 🡒]
