Former Wisconsin Badgers standout Sam Dekker has weighed in on the buzz surrounding UConn Huskies head coach Dan Hurley and his eyebrow-raising gesture following the Huskies' nail-biting 73-72 victory over the Duke Blue Devils in the Elite Eight of the 2026 NCAA Tournament.
To set the scene, Hurley, a coach known for his vibrant personality, was caught on camera appearing to give a playful headbutt to an official after freshman guard Braylon Mullins nailed a game-winning three-pointer. This moment has sparked plenty of conversation.
Dekker, a legend in Wisconsin basketball circles, didn’t hold back in his assessment of Hurley’s antics.
“I'm unbiased here. That’s a technical foul every single time.
For several reasons... it could have cost his team the game, and he might have argued with the officials as if nothing happened. I just don’t get it.
Plus, referees need to stand firm in situations like this,” Dekker expressed in a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.
Interestingly, referee Roger Ayers seemed unfazed by the incident and didn’t call a technical, which could have shifted the game’s outcome by giving Duke a free throw opportunity. Ayers later shared his perspective with Seth Greenberg, explaining that he was unaware of any significant incident.
In a conversation relayed by Nick Kosko of On3, Ayers said, “That situation was absolutely nothing. I spoke with Roger today.
He said, ‘What are you talking about?’ He genuinely didn’t know what I was referring to.
He mentioned, ‘Nothing happened. The ball went in.
I was running back. They were celebrating.
(Dan Hurley) leaned in, said something to me. I said something back.
It was absolutely nothing.’”
Whether this insight will sway Dekker’s opinion remains to be seen. Regardless, Hurley’s actions certainly added another layer of excitement to this year’s March Madness, keeping fans and analysts buzzing.
