Carolina Weighs Costly Move After Davis Exit Talk

Carolina faces a costly decision as it considers replacing Hubert Davis with an established coach amid financial and strategic challenges.

If the Tar Heels decide to part ways with Hubert Davis, they're eyeing a seasoned head coach, which won't come cheap.

After back-to-back first-round NCAA tournament exits, the financial strain on an athletics department that invested heavily in Coach Bill Belichick and his football staff is becoming evident.

Davis might choose to step down instead of being let go. His contract includes a $5.312 million buyout if he’s dismissed on April 1. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg for UNC’s potential spending spree.

Let’s dive into the buyout figures for some of the rumored candidates to replace Davis. Two of these coaches are still competing in the NCAA tournament, with Midwest Regional games on Friday.

Florida Coach Todd Golden

UNC has its sights on Golden, and they won’t need to wait long since Florida was edged out by Iowa 73-72 in the NCAA tournament's second round. The Gators wrapped up their season with a 27-8 record.

Bringing Golden from Gainesville is no small feat financially. The buyout to leave Florida before April 15 is a hefty $16 million, making him one of the priciest coaches to recruit.

Golden does come with some baggage from 2024 allegations of harassment and stalking, but the university cleared him of any Title IX violations in early 2025.

Alabama Coach Nate Oats

Oats is another top contender, known for his innovative system and success against teams like UNC. His Alabama contract features the largest buyout in college basketball.

The buyout if Oats leaves before April 1 is $18 million, dropping to $10 million afterward. UNC would need to write a big check and wait until Alabama’s season concludes. The Crimson Tide (25-9) is set to face Michigan in the Sweet 16.

Iowa State Coach T.J. Otzelberger

Otzelberger, famed for quick turnarounds, is in a long-term deal. His Cyclones (29-7) are up against Tennessee in the Midwest Regional. His buyout is $4 million, making him a more budget-friendly option.

With a decision looming, hiring quickly is crucial as the transfer portal opens on April 7. UNC’s choice could hinge on donor willingness to fund a significant investment.
