In a midweek showdown at Boshamer Stadium, the Tar Heels showcased their defensive prowess and pitching depth to secure an 8-2 victory over UNCG. Ranked No. 14, Carolina (18-3-1) continued their impressive form, thanks in part to standout performances from their corner outfielders and a rock-solid bullpen.
Perry Hargett and Rom Kellis V were instrumental in turning two crucial double plays, adding to Carolina’s reputation for elite outfield defense. Hargett's sliding catch in foul territory and subsequent throw to second cut down a tagging runner, while Kellis’ laser from left field nabbed a potential go-ahead run at the plate. These plays were pivotal in shutting down UNCG's momentum.
On the mound, Carolina utilized six pitchers, tying a season high for the most used in a win. Starter Tom Chmielewski delivered 3.1 innings, allowing two runs on a single hit with a pair of strikeouts.
The bullpen was lights out, combining for 5.2 scoreless innings, surrendering just four hits and three walks while fanning five. Junior Boston Flannery earned his first career win with a solid performance in relief.
Offensively, the Tar Heels were relentless, with almost every hitter reaching base. Owen Hull set the tone early with an RBI single in the first inning, part of a two-run burst that put Carolina on top. After UNCG tied it up in the fourth, Erik Paulsen, leading the team in batting average, delivered the go-ahead run in the sixth.
The seventh inning was where Carolina truly broke the game open. Kellis continued his stellar day with a two-run homer, his first of the season, sparking a five-run rally. A passed ball, a Gavin Gallaher double, and a wild pitch rounded out the scoring spree for the Tar Heels.
Looking ahead, Carolina gears up for a weekend series against Louisville, with the opener marking their first official home night game of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 8 p.m.
ET at Boshamer Stadium. The Tar Heels will look to carry their momentum forward as they continue their impressive campaign.
