Bryce Hepner Stuns Wrestling World With Historic All-America Honor for UNC

Bryce Hepner captures All-America honors, continuing North Carolina's impressive wrestling legacy at the NCAA Championships.

In a thrilling display at the 2026 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in Cleveland, North Carolina's Bryce Hepner etched his name in the annals of Tar Heel history. Competing in the 165-pound category, Hepner achieved All-America honors, a remarkable feat for the first-year Tar Heel. This achievement marks the first time since 2015 that a North Carolina wrestler in this weight class has earned such distinction, following in the footsteps of Ethan Ramos.

Hepner's journey was nothing short of dramatic. He faced a tough quarterfinal matchup against Penn State's top-ranked Mitchell Mesenbrink, where he fell 6-0. But showing resilience, Hepner bounced back in the blood round, securing his All-America status with a nail-biting 1-0 victory over Ryder Downey from Northern Iowa.

The evening brought another challenge as Hepner squared off against Arizona State's Nicco Ruiz, ranked fourth. Despite a valiant effort, Hepner was edged out in a 2-0 decision. Still, his performance ensured that North Carolina continued its streak of having a podium finisher for the eighth consecutive national tournament.

Elsewhere in the tournament, teammates Kysen Terukina (125), Luke Simcox (141), and Jake Dailey (184) each faced tough battles in the consolation rounds, finishing with 1-2 records. They showcased grit and determination, contributing to the team's overall competitive spirit.

Looking ahead, Hepner is set to face his former Ohio State teammate, Paddy Gallagher, in the seventh-place match on the tournament's final day. This clash promises to be an exciting conclusion to his impressive run at Rocket Arena.

As the championships continue, wrestling fans can appreciate the dedication and skill on display, with Hepner's journey serving as a testament to the hard work and tenacity that define the sport.
