UNC left Dublin with a win and a clear first impression: this is not the same team that stumbled through a 4-8 debut season under Bill Belichick.
The Tar Heels beat TCU 15-10 on Saturday, Aug. 29, in the 2026 Aer Lingus College Football Classic at Aviva Stadium, surviving a sloppy night and doing just enough in the biggest moments. UNC was listed as at least a 7-point underdog, but the opener played out like a statement that the season has a different feel already.
The offense never really found smooth footing. UNC turned it over twice and managed only three points after opening the game with 10 in the first quarter.
The ground game was rough, but the Tar Heels still got production through the air, especially from Jordan Shipp and Jelani Thurman, who combined for nine catches and 165 yards. Given the conditions, it was hard to pile on too much.

Belichick’s best work showed up after halftime. His adjustments against TCU’s run game were a big part of why UNC finished strong, and the Tar Heels were cleaner than the Horned Frogs, who piled up double-digit penalties and couldn’t cash in in the red zone.
The clear star was Xavier Lewis. The defensive lineman overwhelmed TCU’s front, finishing with four tackles for loss and two sacks by the midway point of the third quarter.
In a game where both teams dealt with messy conditions, UNC did enough in every phase to come out on top. That was the difference in Dublin.
